Fortuner sways dangerously

#1

Post by Shane »

Mate of mine has suddenly picked up an issue.

2017 model, 170k km - he's had it 3 years. At around 120km/h if he hits a slight indentation in the road the vehicle starts swaying badly.

He's replaced the shocks - no improvement. Recently put on new tyres.

Any ideas?

… Maybe check main (often castellated) nut on the
tapered rocker shaft of/below steering box,
If theres any play or movement there it would
be particularly noticeable going through a dip .

… also check articulating knuckles/joints/rubbers on
(esp front) suspension and anti-roll/sway-bar.

Can be various problems on Fortuners:

1. Shocks (Checked, but can still be wrong)
2. Tires (Some have bed tendencies on vehicles, what did he fit?)
3. If the vehicle has been lifted and panhard rod not corrected, mostly if lifted 2 inches needed.
4. Steering box play
5. Control Arm bushes
6. At the beginning they realized it was not actually the shocks that ware actually under specified, but also the coils, and stiffened up the coils on later models to avoid this, this is a fairly cheap fix, Darryl from Mikem suspension did mine, and he understands those vehicles like the back of his hand
7. 2017 had sway bars in if memory serves, upgrades on them are also available.

Overall if he can live with all the rolling over jokes etc... Ones its sorted, they are great vehicles
It's all relative...
