4x4 Venue: Bella Vallata/Vallarta ?

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

I was reading the word of God recently - no, not the Bible, Andrew St. Pierre White's book: Southern African 4X4 TRAILS. gifted to me by Cyclist, Michael Nel.
In the book ASPW refers to a 4x4 Venue called Bella Vallata which is the old Syringa Spa grounds in Muldersdrif.
On Googling I saw it was maybe spelt Vallarta (wif n Rrrrr)... and ASPW's book may have misspelled it.
I spent many a weekend watching Moto-X at Syringa Spa as a laaitie.

Apparently a Peter Drabek founded the place after Syringa Spa closed down...

I know & I have done EVERY 4x4 Trail in & around Gauteng & I have NEVER heard of this venue.
It's 21km from here - so I can only assume it closed down many years ago.

Can anyone throw some light on the place & what happened to it?

I did my very first 4x4 course there circa 1995. Near the drag strip if I recall?

I can only refer to my motocross days in 19 voetsek (1975) when Syringa was one of the main motocross circuits in die ou Transvaal. Very popular and was operated for about 10 years. I think it closed due to being deemed too unsafe because it had an access road to the centre parking area and pits which passed under a bridge which the track passed over. This bridge was merely a single concrete U precast unit, and riders became increasingly concerned about any accidents occurring before or on this bridge, serious injury would occur.

The track's location is on the northern side of Muldersdrift road where it crosses the R28/N14 about 1km then left turn.

Syringa motocross track closed after the owner, Jannie Stander junior, was murdered on the farm. His father had built the track originally. Jannie jnr raced road bikes in the 80's and 90's with us and later national long circuit championship.

If I had asked "What happened to Syringa Spa?" You guy would be giving great replies...
