Vehicle Reviews - your biggest Pains?

#1

Post by Bogaards »

I have just watched another bakkie review on Youtube.

Basically they drive a cross axle and then just go on and say the vehicle is great. Come on, most 4x4s with a difflock can do it.

Can you maybe help me put a list together of the things being done wrong or things that does not say much in reviews?

There are a few that add zero value when comparing to other vehicles:

1. Tug-o-war
2. Drag races
3. Timed course runs

Things that might be useful:
1. Actual fuel consumption when towing an appropriate sized camping trailer.
2. A (subjective) view on what damage you could cause to the vehicle when exceeding it's limits off-road.
3. What off the shelf accessories are readily available.
4. What mods would be require to make it properly trail worthy.

The BEST one I ever saw was by 4WD24/7 (or whatever they are called now).
They did a multi D/Cab comparative test.
Then they got experts in tuning & suspensions & rig building in to give opinions.

I recall the Triton got nailed as the rear wheels are too far forward so adding an overland rig places excessive weight behind the rear axle.
Another they said had poor brakes but an upgrade is pricey.

It was very well done, albeit Ozzie specific...

… if one does a vehicle review,
might be best just to provide a link
to the manufacturers/marketers homesite plugs etc
… and mainly expand /expose what they dont .,. ?

To add what Manny said. I really liked this video as they got independent specialists in to comment on suspension, gearbox etc.

Then there is Car Expert. Paul reviews them all in the same way, so great if you are comparing two similar vehicles from videos that reviewed both in the same way.

I do have a pain with some of these channels where they review a double cab, cruiser, body on frame SUV's and then complain about it sounding agricultural, or the ride and handling qualities not being so refined.

I watched a review last night. The guy did not even engage 4x4 low in it (4x4 high all the time). Then het gets stuck... The opening says he 4x4 every weekend?

Surely the guy should now low range is there for a reason?

100% of ZA "reviewers" are paid to NOT provide an honest review these days. I think this stems from the ZA publishing laws around non-comparative advertising?

In the OLD DAYS (1980s), Car Magazine would have decent reviews. Since 1994, not so much..........
Similarly, Bike SA used to provide a decent product evaluation. Now they say very little just in case a manufacturer or dealer stops offering models to "test".

I've completely stopped using ZA formal publications or formal "reviewers" as a benchmark or reference. Youtube is a MUCH better source of info.

Sadly not enough Seffrickens have the balls to be honest it seems?
