Vehicle Prices in Other Locations

As some are aware, I'm sitting in Luanda at the moment. And I'll be stuck here to the end of the month. It's been a tough trip - I've got a serious project on the go, and I also flew out two days after arriving back at home after my mini-River Trip / Kruger trip where I acquired tick-bite fever. I pre-empted this luckily. I chatted with my GP just before leaving and he gave me a course of anti-biotics for TB fever, so I started that as soon as the symptoms appeared. I was man-down for a day or two (although I was still at work), but I'm over the worst now...

Something that struck me as strange was the massive number of luxury 4x4 barges cruising around the area of Luanda I am in. For example, I see more Y62 Patrols here in a few minutes than I have ever seen in Pretoria. Walking the three-odd hundred metres from my hotel today to a (very nice) local retaurant for my lonely, Sunday, boozey lunch I saw several. There were three that drove past me on the way. There was one parked at my hotel. And there is another one parked just around the corner from the restaurant. Yesterday between a shopping mall and my hotel, five drove past and one was parked at the hotel (not the same one as this morning). And these are just Y62 Patrols. I'm not particularly interested in Cruisers and G-Wagons and similar, but there are a gazillion of those here too...

And I was wondering, how do so many people afford Y62's here. Over my pre-lunch beer, I did a bit of googling. I could not get a price on a new Y62 - I'm actually not even sure if you can buy them new here. But the going rate for a Y62 seems to be between Angolan Kwanza 8,000,000 and 10,000,000 second hand.

This model here in the picture below is priced at the princely sum of Kwanza 9,000,000. Which works out to about ZAR357,132. Which is probably at least R600,000 cheaper than you will pay for a similar second hand model in "ye goode olde" ZAR.

Just makes one realise how much the MIDP has shafted us. :)

Taxes Ian as well as the prohibition of us importing second hand vehicles into SA. Those cars, and I am assuming, are not new correct?

Adding to this:

A brand new top model Fortuner 2.8 4x4 AT is currently R870 900

Here in New Zealand, a brand new Fortuner "Limited" which is the top model is NZ$62790 (R659 543 at the current exchange rate)

SA (And Thailand) Makes the Fortuner.... NZ makes sweet FA and imports all vehicles...

The Toyota Corolla RSi was a lot cheaper (in Rands) in Australia than in SA, yet it was made here & exported to Oz...

Quite sad that there is no actual benefit on "locally" build vehicles. (Apart from those employed and the local tax).

It is cheaper to buy a South African build Ford Ranger in Australia than what it is to buy it in South Africa.

To add to what Wave said above. Entry level GX Fortuner in Australia $54'147, GXL $59'440 and Crusade $67'537. All Fortuner's are imported

Redman, Arsetrailia had no MIDP, they used to make Holdens, Toyotas etc there.
Not only that, there was related manufacture of other components that was then lost.

The previous Arsetralian regime
not only gave their 2nd biggest Port (Darwin) to the Chinese, they let the entire Ozzie motor manufacture industry collapse.

As a result the Ozzies make NOTHING, thousands of jobs were lost and everything is imported (mainly from Thailand).

Everytime a Fortuner or Everest is launched the Ozzie Youtubers claim there was Ozzie input.
There wasnt, they just did testing there.

So, whilst we pay 20% more thanks to MIDP, it helps with the balance of payments, export credits & job creation.

That's why SA has a surprising wide range of choice ito models, given that we only account for 0.25% of the world market.

Thanks Manny... (will go wash the egg of my face now)

But interestingly (and also quite sad) is the resulting collapse in the local (Kangarooville) tire manufacturing industry. As the car factories closed down a lot of the tire brands followed suit. Thinking about it, Toyota SA fitted over 180'000 Dunlop tires to Hilux's in 2021 alone.
