4x4 Action Group

So the kids are studying for exams and my wife has severely limited me i.t.o acceptable activities for the day.

So I'm on Youtube.

Just watched Moegatle river trail (OFF COURSE 4X4) and the topic came up - should they install lockers in their vehicles?

Now I know this has probably been debated ad-nauseum on other forums - but if well seasoned veterans like Ant + Japie feel the need to discuss this topic then surely it hasn't truly been resolved?

Personally I prefer the OPTION of having lockers - both front + rear with the ability to use them as I feel the need.

In fact, I'm currently considering the option of fitting a LOKKA autolocker in my IFS but still reading up on it...

What say you?

It makes off-road driving much easier and kinder to the environment.

But it must make 4x4 easier, which is then makes to want to do more vehicle breaking maneuvers.......

Why Lokka and not Ashcroft, Arb etc ?

Chas two reasons:

1. Cost. The Lokka seems to be significantly cheaper than mechanical lockers with on/off functionality.

2. Turning ability. With switch lockers you need to continiously switch on/off as engaged will limit your ability to turn. I've experienced this with my SFA many times.

What I don't like about the LOKKA is that you're technically engaged the moment you go to 4x4.

Thus I'd always have a front locker engaged.

The fact that it automatically disengages when you turn is nice. But how would that affect your driving if you're doing 80km/h in H4 on a dirt road?

I have asked myself this same question.

But not having lockers means you must use more momentum....

I would think that, whether you have lockers or not, the same principle of "not overestimating your abilities" would apply?

For me personally, the slower I can do an obstacle - the happier I am.

I don't consider myself experienced enough to tackle the really rough stuff - yet.

Especially not with my IFS.

But the more I watch on Youtube, the more I'm convinced that a 4x4 is no better than a 4x2 once you've lost traction on one of the front wheels...

In fact, it would seem that a 4x2 with difflock would outperform an open diff 4x4 on certain obstacles...

Please correct me if I'm wrong?

Only on a serious cross axle on level terrain. A little momentum helps everywhere. Even for a 4x2.

If I could have it I would!
Especially in mud I want the equal power to go to all wheels. Less chance of starting to dig in when all power goes to a specific wheel as it loses traction.

I did not know that if you engage 4x4 the front lockers are automatically engaged won't like that. Would like a seperate switch just like my rear locker.

If you get into trouble you stil have an option.

I would like to be as careful and slow as possible and not have to hammer into an obstacle.

As I see it:
Suspension lift gives extra ground clearance and may further facilitate big wheels whose vertical travel range may be less ...
Shocks need be appropriately longer travel shocks to preserve and perhaps ... increase articulation ...
Also sway bar geometry ...
Interplay of several aspects needs be optimally integrated.

Short answer: No

Firstly the cost.
2ndly - the Hiliux front diff is not tough enough.
3rdly: to spend that much money si that your vehicle is more capable over 300m in 3 years is just stupid.
4th, I THINK the front TC on the 2.8 GD-6 still operates when you operate the rear DL, so the benefits of a front DL will really be minimal.

I, too am concerned if the drive train os strong enough to support a front diff lock.

However, on the other side of the coin, you had to use way more momentum to get through that mud puddle the other day....

A front diff lock would have seen me through?

Most of the cv breakages I have seen on Youtube have been due to wheels spinning on a wheel lift and then suddenly hitting the ground at speed.
