It all depends. I have had 4x4's with serious flex and 35's. Also a Mog and a Samil with lockers in which I did serious offloading.
Also some 4x4's with rear lockers.

Now the Cruisers with lockers. Cruisers are not know for great flex so it is easy to lift a wheel a d lose traction with them.

Do you have less fun with a fully locked vehicle. I do not think so.
What I love about lockers is that you use much less momentum. You also put less strain on the drive train. Less damage to the obstacle.
Important is to know when and where to use them.

Unbelievable how it changes a vehicles capability. Frans Reicherts Patrol became a mean machine when he added a front locker.

I have yet to see an open diff vehicle goes where a locked one can go. You can add as much flex as you like eventually you will loose traction.

Reading all the comments, its my heart desire to upgrade my Jimny and fit it all, with front and rear lockers. it will be unstoppable.
Having driven my Pajero with TC, Henry it super capable believe me.
When I changed from the Pajero to the Fortuner I felt the difference, having done the three most difficult mountain trips, Road to Hell with Manny and Crips, without a locker it was extremely difficult, Baboons Pass, was doable but you struggled. Matroosberg , specially up the Z-drive to the peak was near impossible without Lockers.
The Jimny allows me to have more fun, Manny is correct, you need proper ground clearance and choose your line, and commit.
We need to consider what the newer Fords do different, Manny will agree that Ranger at Sanstorium was an eye opener, and seeing Charles at the last event that Everest again amazed me.

This is what happens when you try and type a response quickly while waiting for your wife in the car ImageImageImage

I meant that the TC switches off in low range.

I see you guys talking Lokka. Have any of you been able to get hold of them lately. I lost contact with them a month or two into Covid, and so far no answer to any of my emails. Last email sent beginning of May.

David their website seems to be down as well.

It seems as if Ronald from 4x4 Traction does them as well....

Cool to know, just wonder what his prices are going to be like and if he can still contact them. I'll whatsapp him sometime about it, but I'm in no rush right now anyways as my finances are all screwed up with this Covid now and I have more pressing matters on my vehicle right now than to worry about the front lokka.

I would love to have a rear locker on my Defender. Think it would make life so much easier .

May a company, like The House Doctor could sponsor one? :D

When I did my SFA, the new rear diff came with a LSD. Even at 40 years old, it is nice and tight, and has changed my van's abilities. Especially in soft sand.
Only locker for the rear is an ARB at around R26k. The Lokka in the front works out at around R5k, and I don't still need to install a compressor which is needed for the ARB. For another $Aussie 9.95 I can tighten the LSD up even more. But it already hops and skips around sharp corners on gravel, so doubt its a good idea to do that upgrade as it becomes close to a spool.

David my only reservation on the LOKKA for the front wil be if you need to drive in 4H .

Or if your rear diff should break for whatever reason and you need to crawl home in FWD.

I tried to get hold of Ronald of 4x4 Traction. He is on leave but will be back tomorrow.

Will chat with him and get hus input.

Those are extreme situations, and not something that happens often. I've already had to change some of my habits as the old diffs and props do not work like my old setup where I could just leave the Hubs locked. I now have to much slack in various parts that cause problems, along with slip joints that dont seem to like high speed. Need to get that sorted as well, but no budget for stuff like that now. I have hardly worked since Covid started.
