Yes. My Jimny is also a run around for work. I get 13.8km/l according to the onboard computer. In town. If the school run don't happen often get a Jimny. R309 000.00 for the base model, new.

Sounds like the right option then. See the GLX 2nd hand low mileage about that price too.

Put them both on a lift. Inspect the suspension and undercarriage and decide with which one you want to go.

Automatic GLX Jimny would be better in traffic?

Sierra? It is a Jimny All-Grip. The GLX is the new 1500 Jimny. Other countries call it a Sierra.

Rule of thumb for anything French:

If you can't eat it, drink it or f#ck it, don't spend any money on it.

Look at the Grand Vitara if carting kids. Not exactly light on fuel, but more than capable on or off road.

I dont like Renault and have never owned one, so wont comment on the Duster.
I had a previous model Jimny. It was fun packing for a holiday - you also have the same fun playing tetris.

I have 2 kids which I took to school with the Jimny. The big one sat in front, one side of the back seat had to be folded down to fit the bag. The small one was in a car seat behind the driver and his much smaller bag was lying next to the other ones big bag. But we went away for weekends in it, I made my own roofrack thingy and fitted ammo cases. That and some interesting packing and we had a bucket of fun in it. I regret selling it but we really did need more space. One day I will buy one again.

I am only adding this as someone mentioned the GV.
The GV can go places. Its not a Land Cruiser but a 40mm lift, one size up on tires and she wont dissapoint. Just make sure there is protection, some expensive pieces of drivetrain are exposed. I have a 3.2l V6 GV, she goes like hell, drinks like a fish and I wont sell her. If you get one, look for a 2.4 auto summit model. Model year 2012 or newer. Some 2.4l models between 2008 and 2011 have engine blocks that crack but Suzuki still fixes it and the last time I checked it was no charge...
Cheese, canals and mud. Flattest country in the world. Wish they had 4x4'ing here

Thanks Samaya. Informative and an interesting perspective.

I have also been considering an older Jeep TJ diesel. Thoughts? I know there is a stigma attached but I also think it is an alternative as it definitely goes off road and would be fine for a once off school run every two months or a quick run to work 4 times a month?
