Which one should one go for? Heard some say to stay away from the new one due to issues and it being a bit soft? Thoughts?

Depends on your budget. I think both are fine because they are basically the same vehicle

Depends on your budget.
You'll struggle to find a new GD for less than R400k.
You'll get a very nice D-4D shape for under R400k.
Personally I'd go D-4D shape (2014 or 2015 model).
Those were permanent 4WD.
The New GD's are RWD unless you put it in 4x4.

What’s wrong with that? Doesn’t it have AWD setting?

This is a 4x4 Forum.
If you want to discuss AWD go post in the Softroader section of the Community Forum.

As far as I'm concerned AWD refers to a softroader that normally sends most drive to the front axle and only sends drive to the rear when it senses slippage via a Haldex type coupling.
AWD's in my opinion, have no Low Range Transfer case.
Fearless is permanent 4x4, it is not AWD...

When you’re on the tar, is it permanent 4WD (can’t engage 2wd only)?
