The Freelander 1 was designed and manufactured by Rover, it was a POS of epic proportions. The FL2 is MUCH better.
... Yes ... unusually ... I can only agree with you on this fact.
FreeLander 1 appealed to the market and many were sold ... and they paid the price ... for a long time...

... I think one needs to look at successful car models more than makes or brands...
Some cars have been country miles ahead of others in the past:
Eg Peugeot 504, Beetle, Isuzu KB280, Early Landcruisers eg HJ45, Early Ford Escorts and Cortina’s etc etc etc
and cars like those win reputations that are wrongly conferred, through nurturing, on the Car Maker /Brand over time ...
eg current Hiluxes have nothing on and are vastly different to, the old early hiluxes of the 70s and 80s
and same I feel the same can be said of the LandCruisers .
So there’s no convincing basis to monotonously rant on about them like raucous Pirates Supporters.

Toyota & Lexus both use the same philosophy - keep reliable, but don’t innovate. They both use old school proven tech. Yet the price is still premium & neither of them will stand behind their products with decent warranties.

They will always be one step ahead in reliability but two steps behind in everything else.

Honda on the other hand are extremely reliable, yet they are big innovators. Same with Mazda. They deserve a lot more respect as an overall package.

I don’t understand your point regarding old tech and reliability?

Just on the next page we have a thread about the Grenadier. People are raving about that vehicle because it's old school, old tech and it’s got a reliable motor. And remember who started that thread 😉😉

Buy slap a Toyota badge on it......😂😂😂

I think you are missing the point XJ is making.

He is agreeing that Toyota overall is a very reliable vehicle - but they fail to innovate and you pay a premium price for a brand that does not innovate on the same level as for instance Honda.

I reckon you pay a premium price for a Toyota, not simply for peace of mind, but due to simple micro economics - supply and demand. The higher the demand, the higher the price.

I don’t think the Ineos is a good comparison. It’s completely unproven

... yes ... and if it really has to be built as
... ‘ a Defender that isnt ’...
then I would also put a Toyota engine in it ...
Spares, Support and Know-how everywhere
its actually designed to go ie in the Bush...

But if you just want a car to put your golf clubs in when you go to play at The River Club,
then buy a G-Wagon ...

I think the new Defender is a ‘Defender that isn’t....’.

The Ineos stole its lunch

 this isn't going anywhere , in my opinion .

You like the Grenadier or not . Buy it , or leave it . Take a chance or leave it . Spares or no spares . When and if it gets here , the powers in charge should have sorted those logistics out .

Like the Mad man said somewhere , Porsche has only 2 agents in the country . JHB and capetown. Yet people buy them .

Each to his own . I still like the Grenadier , and will see how things go , and who sells them , se what the prices are ?? Maybe wait and get a secondhand or demo model ?? Who knows ??
