I am insured with Cross Country, must be honest rather pay more for peace of mind. My experience with Outsurance and Miway, causes me to be very cautious with the likes of Budget, Verseker and others.

An important factor for me is who the insurer appoints to repair the vehicle. I have had good results when the insurer appointed a manufacturer approved panel beater, and exceptionally bad results when the insurer (a different one) went with the lowest quote.

Years ago I worked at Liberty Life (Kurt may be aware of this), I had a Junior Underwriter JayDee.
A flamboyant creature - he left to make handbags. When that venture failed he joined Auto & General.
At that time A&G was amongst the cheapest insurers.

He called me to catch up & said they had an in house joke that the Claims Department was called 'Repudiations'.

IGI had a pay off line 'We don't hassle - we pay', but a mate who worked there said it was really "We don't hassle because we don't pay!:...
IGI no longer exists.

So cheapest is not always best...

Let me chip in first.

Tuffstuff are the only ones that contact me directly and pay directly.

All the others have an angle.

Either you must get your car to a ZA port, on your own cost and they will take it to the closest place of repair. Or you get it to the ZA port and they will take it to where the car needs to go, of your preference.

Or they tell the client to arrange a quote to have a ballpark figure. Then give the client a hand full of cash and tell him he is on his own.

So yes, you need to make sure of what the fine print says.

Henri I had this same comparative with what my Santam policy covered as regards across border recovery.

My policy covers this very well with full recovery SADC countries. When I bragged about this I was not believed until I sent the relevant section to Emile to analyze. He gave it full thumbs.

Cheers

Over here there is a certain similar Insurer who regularly finds itself on the wrong side of a motion court roll for persistently repudiating claims. They are cheap for a reason, they simply make no pay-outs.

Friend of mine used to work at IGI and claimed that their in house slogan was
We don't hesitate we repudiate

Was with Discovery for a long time - they were always good and provided consistent service but of late can’t say the same.
Moved to Tuffstuff a year ago. Quote was the exact same as Discovery but obviously the Sadac repatriation services were much better.
Had one incident a few months ago on the way to the Kruger just outside Dullstroom and the service was pretty poor. They apologized for the incident so hoping the one and only.
They have sent 3 updates to their policy in the last 6 months. When I queried one of the clauses and responded via email - I never got a response back.
I generally hear really good feedback on Tuffstuff though - so hopefully it will ring true for me.
I did appreciate their discounted rate over Covid though

Must have been a very painful time for Liberty and their clients.

Absolutely not Erin.

Making me think of a few items I can select off our list and see what the savings turn out to be.

Thanks for the info!

This is what I alluded to above - but I don't have enough info...
