What a crock of shit.

It would be interesting to see what the ombudsman would have to say about this clause, and of course if it will stand up in court.

How anyone can still use this insurer, is beyond me.

The wording states that you will:

Inform the police within 6 hours...of any such incident which may give rise to a claim...

A few of my of observations:
It states police, not SAPS, I'm assuming that if you are in aneighbouring country, you can report it to the local police.

It states ... of any such incident... so it's now when you became AWARE of the loss, it's from the time of the INCIDENT.

Scenario One:
So you drive to Lanseria airport, park, go wait for your flight, you board at say, 10:10, at 10:30 they tell you to switch off your electronic device.
At 10:33 they steal your car.
At 10:40 Cartrax send you an SMS say they have a Tow/Main Battery Disconnect? Etc notification, please advise if everything is OK.
At 11:00 your plane takes off.
At 11:10 you haven't replied, they call, you don't answer, they dispatch the tracking unit.
At 11:15 the thieves have pulled into Zandspruit, stripped out the tracking unit & they go throw it away.
Cartrax loses all contact but are aware it was last in Zandspruit.
At 11:45 you land.
At 11:50 Cartrax try call you again.
At 12:00 you are heading to baggage claim & switch on your phone.
At 12:20 you baggage comes through & your are busy reading all your texts. You see the SMS from Cartrax & call them.
You are now convinced your vehicle is stolen.
You head to car hire while calling your wife, your insurer, etc.
You get to car hire, get the car & head out.
It's 13;03 - you head to your business meeting, your head spinning.
14:00 you sit down with a cup of tea, the important meeting starts. suddenly you say 'Stuff it' I have to report this to the cops - I'll go straight after the meeting.
The meeting ends at 15:12, your client asks if you would like to go across the road for a drink, they are very interested & would like to discuss your proposal further.
You explain you can't, shake hands & excuse yourself.
You get to the basement, get the rental & drive out into the streets of a City you don't know well. Heading to the closest polices tation.
It's 15:33 - your vehicle was stolen 5 hours ago.
You have one hour left.
You arrive at 15:48, get in the queue, nervously checking the time constantly, as you wait for your turn.
Finally at 16:33 you are in front of n SAPS officer, who really, really, really does not want a guy from Jo'burg, who had a vehicle stolen in Jo'burg, reporting a theft in Plumsted.
But you persist & he takes a statement. You put all the info on.
He stamps it & initials it & tells you to come back in 4 hours for the CAS Number.
There is no exact time on the document so you are sharp, you write 11:40 on the form, the time of the Cartrax SMS.

You've had a horrible day, possibly lost a deal & now have to go back to the Cop Shop late at night for a CAS number because you fly back tomorrow lunch time.

Scenario Two:
You are in Namibia, Zim, Bots or Moz.
Your vehicle gets stolen.
You find out an hour later.
You ID & Passport are in the vehicle.
You have your wallet & your cell phone with Data Roaming.
The nearest police station is 2 hours away.
There are 6 of you in two (well, now one, vehicle).
You have a off road camper & nothing to pull it with.
You have no passport.
It's the early evening.
You start discussing options:
* Do you call a mate in SA to fetch you?
* How do you get out the country with no passport?
* You need to make a list of what was in the car - damn! My camera.
Then you realise, nothing else matter but the 6 hour rule. you have just over 4 hours to meet the draconian 6 hour rule.
You ask your mate to take you to the local cops, it's Africa, it's getting dark. It's 2 hours away.
You leave the other 4 in your group (wives and kids) behind & head out into the dark.
You realise the next 24 hours are going to be fun.
After 20 minutes your mate says "I have 24 hours to report a theft"..
You hope you two will still be mates in a day's time...

My personal feeling is that anything under 12hours is unreasonable & would prevent me from insuring with such a company.

OK so which insurance company repatriates back to SA at their cost - as opposed to you forking out and arranging most of the slog work and only later being able to claim?

This question is irrelevant in the context of the notice period that is being discussed.

I’d rather do it myself than a 6-hour bell above my head

I am with momentum (ex Alexander Forbes), not a day’s hassle even after I rolled my FJ on a farm road, reported 24h after it happend and without any police report. They paid out a fair amount.

My in-laws borrow my BushLapa 2x per year to go to Botswana, no issues.

Yes, if the BL needs to be repatriated back to sa, I’ll have to manage that. Henri’s, R10000+, happy to make it work myself then. It’s not that Tuff.

Any of them that don’t have a ridiculous and unreasonable clause around the notice period Image

Give Cross Country a call and read their T’s & C’s before committing

I'm with Santam through Erin.
In 2019 a crack appeared in my new KB250D's windscreen.
Called Erin.
Sorted within 48 hours.
No XS.

I smashed Fearless on Road to Hell in 2019.
Called Erin.
R22k damage sorted.
No XS.

In early January this year I had a municipal grass cutter shoot a stone through my Isuzu ibakkies side window.
I made ONE call to Erin - sorted.
Paid R350 XS.

So there are options.

If you regularly go cross border - give a CCIC broker a call.

But others offer Cross Border cover...

Were any of these calls required to be made within 6 hours of the “incident”?
