The CEO of Bosch Dr Volkmar Denner says there is a future for diesel.
The reason is a breakthrough in NOx emissions reduction.

They can get the emissions down to 10% of the current legislated levels...

But he is German - so it may be by cheating - who knows.
You do know what lying bastards they are right?

These are the same people that reckon the Amarok is a proper 4x4.

OCTOBER 2018

CAR
Magazine

CAR October...

Bugatti on the cover

New Editor Terrance introduces himself - he's a laaitie.

The new Z4 previewed - who cares?

Electric Merc - who cares?

New A-Class sedan (FWD)

Interesting graphs on the motor industry & it's mergers etc.

New Models on the way - only the new Jeep GC Trailhawk & the Duster & Jimny interest us.

They DRIVE an AMG C63S: R1.5 bar for a 375kW C-ClassCoupe'.

They also DRIVE an M3.. they DRIVE the new AYGO 1.0 with 53kW of raw power, a Aventador costing nearly R9million, the new De Lux version of the C-HR...

A lakker report on a1911 FIAT Torpedo - 11kW and a top speed of 60km/h from a 1.8 petrol 444 speed. Not bad for over 100 years ago...

TESTS:
Three way test of Polo Vivo 1.4, the Ford Figo 1.5 & thye Suzuki Baleno 1.4 - VW wins, Ford comes last.

Test of new Touareg V6 3.0TDi - R1 140 000. It is better than the Volvo XC90 D5 & the Discover SE they say...

The also test the Ford ECOSPORT 1.0 - they say rather buy the Renault Captur.

The test the Renault Megane RS280 - the Golf GTi is better.

Mini Cooper S 5 door - They suggest you buy a Polo GTi rather.

The Peugeot 308 is worse than a Golf 1.4 & a 97kw Megane according to the test...

They wrap up a LONG TERM TEST of the Subaru XV 2.0i - used 8.71l/100km - not bad...

That's about it... not a great edition - probably because of the editorial changes...

NOVEMBER 2018

CAR
Magazine

CAR November...

Toyota Supra on the cover

INSIGHT into the nrew Merc EQC - Full EV - 450km range - which is acceptable. 0 - 100 in 5.1secs

INSIGHT - new Merc GLE (was the ML back then)

New Models on the way - new Q8, new F-Pace, Cherokee Facelift, new Auris...

INSIGHT - VW scraps the Beetle - a patheric attempt at a retro revival. BMW did a better job with the Mini.
The Beetle started out in 1933... over 21 million were sold.

INSIGHT - new Audi E-Tron, basically a Q7 EV.

DRIVE - The Toyota Supra - basically a Z4. In that it is a rebadged Z4...

DRIVE - Lexus UX - basically a C-HR with a crapper motor. Rather buy the C-HR...

DRIVE - AMG GT63 S

DRIVE - New Sante Fe from Hyundai - basically a facelift

DRIVE - Yaris GRMN from Gazoo Racing - 156kW Yaris. Not coming to SA.

DRIVE - Merc AMG E63 Cabrio, new X4 from BMW, new Cayenne - R2.2 million, face lifted Creta, facelifted Tucson.

Then a 1957 Volvo PV444 - 1.6 petrol with 49kW & 115Nm. Took 18 secs to get to 100 & would eventually reach 117km/h.

TESTS:
Kia Stinger R850k but they say it is better than the Audi S5 or the BM 440i. It does 0 - 100 in under 5 secs and will reach 270km/h

Merc A200 - rather buy an A3 Sportback.

Volvo XC60 beats the Q5 2.0TDi & the GLC250d.

Jag E-Pace P300 (2.0 diesel for R900k!!! - they say rather buy the Merc GLC Coupe it's cheaper or even the Range Rover Evoque. So the Jag is crap.

New Hyundai 2.5 CRDi tested - beats Ford Tourneo & the Kombi.

LONG TERM TEST of the Honda CR-V (Compact Recreational Vehicle) - used 8.44l/100. CAR Liked it.

Very interesting article on WHAT KILLS A TURBO! - Lack of Lube, contaminated oil, extreme conditions & crap getting into the turbo kill it...
Interesting: COST of a TURBO;
Ranger 2.2 R14k from Ford R10 for a pirate part.
Golf GTi R33k from VW or R12k for an aftermarket one.
Hilux D-4D R22k from Toyota or only R8k elsewhere.
Range Rover 4.4 R27k or R14k...

Clearly VW are nuts!

Finally a BUYERS GUIDE on the Merc W110 'Fintail' from the 1960's.
You can get one for R180k.

That's a wrap!

TESTS:
The NEW Duster! The 1.5dCi EDC tested.
They say its awesome. Its better than the outgoing one in every way!
80kW 250Nm used only 5.7 liters on their route.
It beat the Ford EcoSport AND the Haval H2

TEST of the Subaru Forester. It only pits out 115kW & 196Nm from it's 2.0 motor - that is way too little.
R500k - its worse than the Tiguan AllSpace but better than the top X-Trail

They compare a Honda's Amaze to a Suzuki Dzire. Zook wins.

Then for XJJunkie!
They test an HAVAL H9 (Prado knock-Off).
They say what EVERY test says - that 2.0T motor sucks gas in order to move a large SUV around.

They DID NOT compare it to the Prado, but rather the Everest & Fortuner.

They say buy the Everest or the Fortuner rather.

It used 12.5 L/100 on their fuel route - 20% more than the competition.

It is well priced though.

They also test the new Lexus ES250 & say what I have been saying - rather launch it as a Camry - which it is.

LONG TERM TEST - Kia Sportage 1.7 CRDi - 7.05 L/100km overall - that's 14km/l VERY good! They liked it.

Jag is fitting 32 charging stations across SA.

That's basically it!

Stupid question

But why the CAR Magazine? Why not LeisureWheels or another magazine more related to 4x4?

JANUARY 2019 MAG REVIEWS

LEISURE WHEELS
JANUARY

A BAJAJ QUTE (I know... what???) & a JEEP Gladiator on the cover.

Mag opens with the Editor (whover he is) saying he is, sort of, leaving (again)...

Pages 12 & 13 - The usual great VOETSPORE article.

They interview some woman working for Fiat/Chrysler. Dunno why?

Kinglsly Holgate is on pages 16 & 17.

Then on Pages 18 & 19 LW also covers the new Gladiator by Jeep.
No news on whether it will come to SA.

Page 20 they discuss the THAR.

On page 24 there is a small article on a Hyundai Palisae (named after the steel fence?).
It's massive. 8 seater. 3.8 V6. US only.

Something INTERESTING on page 27 - a Compressor called the Bullet.
Nothing fancy, but it comes in a small box - looks like a steel military Ammunition box.
Easy to pack & compact.

Then the Bajaj QUTE - made in India. R70 000. Looks like a Fiat Panda.
RWD. 217cc 10kW & 20Nm. 10litre tank.
Not available here.

Coverage of the 'Beyond the Rift Valley Adventure' - seems it's Isuzu based. Haven't read it.

Then LW tests the Jimny, it looks like a different one to the one their sister publication CAR tested.
They say they got 9.26 litres/100km average - compare that to what CAR got in my post above.

Final article of interest is on electric Leisure vehicles:
1. The Rivian SUV - the most powerful is 560kW & 1120Nm.
2. BMW iNext
3. Tesla Truck
4. Mitsubishi E-Volution.
5. Rivian RIT pick Up - 0 - 100 in 3.1secs.

That's it from Leisure Wheels January.

JANUARY 2019 MAG REVIEWS

go! Drive&Camp
JANUARY

Kosi Bay to Maputo Bay & a Triton on the cover.

After several pages of crap & adverts there isan article on that sate of Jurgens CI... seems to have survived.
The article on Jurgens, which held 95% of the caravan market before its collapse, goes on for several pages.

Then go! Camp & Drive ALSO covers the Rivian RIT pick up. They say torque is 14 000Nm & they add (no that's not a typo) but it is.
But other than that blaps, go! magazine covers the Rivian best of the 3.

Conqueror - who offer three of its trailers in a upmarket Platinum spec, has launched a top spec called the Recce Limited Edition, with even more spec like TV, radio, auto opening tents, some get air suspension etc...

go!also covers the Jeep Gladiator....

Then they also check out the Jimny - they quote the manufacturer's claimed 6.3litres/100km.

The Mahindra XUV500 has been revised - no mention of whether any models are 4x4.

Then they test the Nissan NP300 2.5TDi 4x4. R370k. No diff lock. Zero NCAP stars. I wouldn't...

Then many pages on various great places to visit in Southern Africa,

A guy built his own pop up bakkie based tent.

Then a Tow test - Triton vs the rest.

An article on the Bush Lapa Baobab - it has a Star Decal on it's side - so it's clearly for nobs.

An article on tent repairs. Interesting.

Article on rims - steel vs alloy. which is best. Alloy wins - just!!!

That's it for go! Camp&Drive JANUARY!

Not a subscription I'll renew - but good for caravaners...
