Maybe I should give a set of 35 Powertracs a go :D
Look, the Red-letter Grabbers were the best value for money ever. I paid R2000ea for 25 of them... and they came with a LOT of other new tyres too 😀

They looked pretty good too.

But you don't get deals like that every day!

Dick Cepek / Mickey Thompson 35s are around R6500 each last time I checked (plus shipping from jhb) - Powertrac 35s are R2200 each. on a set of 5 that's a saving of over R21 000.
That buys a pretty acceptable amount of high end beer. I can live without a brand name on my tyres for that much beer....

But the Trepadors are not far off the Crushers off-road & also offer good tar grip & are quiet
Same story with Boggers, lateral stability issues. Also squiggly if you tow a heavy load (I don't do this often nor far unless my Cruiser is far away). But that's a trade-off of the paddle design.

I find mine not to be that noisy, but the JK has proper sound. Downfall is, my staff hear me coming from about a block away. Haven't broken one yet.

I don't believe you'll beat the Chinese ones for value for money. high on performance, low on street cred though. they ain't a BFG thats for sure...
I was keen to try these Power Rover as Avon has them on his Jeep and is very happy, especially for the cost.

My problem was they don't make my size in M/T (265/65/17 standard Tuna tyre) they come in the 70 profile, and my aim from ages back was to run my camping trailer and car on the same size, so running the 70 profile would lift the trailer too much.

I even contacted PowerTrac China, they had fantastic customer service, but alas, no M/T in my std size.

I noticed today that Martin is running Radar Renegade M/T tyres, he says they are quieter than the Achillies and at R2100 ea he is extremely happy.

In terms of AT tires, I had Cooper AT3’s later on on the Ranger as well as my FJ.

I did some rocky routes, nothing hectic and found them adequate. I also did sand and easily deflated to 0.5 bar and never really worried about debeading. They weren’t great in the sand, but again, more than adequate

The AT3’s are fantastic on tar and in the wet and because I spend 90% of my time on the black top, that is where they matter most

The worst AT tires for was/is the Geolanders the 200 came out with. Horrible, horrible, horrible tires in any off road conditions. I never felt comfortable with them. Way to soft. Maybe the profile was to high for the size of the vehicle (early Fortuners come to mind).

I also had KL71’s and loved them on trails. Awesome tires and also not as noisy as people would think because they are directional tires. Didn’t like wet tar that much, but show me a MT tire that does and I’ll show you a honest politician.

Then I decided on STMaxx and have stuck with them since. Ranger, FJ and 200. Never ever any issues. They do get noisy strangely enough.

Currently have the STT Pro’s on the FJ as I got them for a steal. They hate the black top. Love the off road stuff. I still need to test them in sand

My next set of tires I want to test is the Maxiss RAZR. They however never have any stock.

Mike, those AT3’s you had. Were they the SUV spec or the LT spec?

I just had a look on Errolstyres website at a few prices:

All 265/70R17

BFG KO2 - 120/117S - R3602
Hankak Dynapro - 113T - R3464

So for a 3.8% saving you get a load index of 1150kg per tyre versus 1400kg

Cooper ST Maxx - 121/118Q - R4019

Higher load index (1450kg) but a slower speed rating for an 11.6% price increase.....

Anyhoo, the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure seems like the best of both worlds, R2008 for a load index of 115T which is 1215kg and a higher speed rating than all of the above tyres.

Kurt, I said it before, nothing would have withstood constant digging and spinning on that flat rock, those splinters were terrible. These picture will give an idea of the terrain we travelled the past two weekends, and both makes were brilliant.

Keep in mind my Achilles tyres were fitted before we did the 10 passes trip.
So the passes trip, river trip, Mogatle river , the Gorge, and the Road to Hell, its done over 40 000km's already, and good for another 40 000km.

So from the pictures its clear, I am not shy of playing in the rocky sections, unlike all gravel runners, testing the donkey cart routes. Lol,

Good question. I suspect they were LT.

It’s the same with Conti AT. There’s softer versions

I have been quite happy with the Firestone Destination A/Ts. I'm on my 3rd set. I originally bought them because they had reasonable reviews, and they were cheap. I chose 215/80R15's because it's a very common size, so I wouldn't have a problem getting a replacement anywhere I went.

They handle wet and dry tar very well. They deflate really nicely, and so far I haven't managed to kill one.

I have often considered putting M/T's on, but haven't yet found a situation where I could put the blame on the tyres for not getting through an obstacle.

Saxj, good points.
Firstly 80 is serious sidewall.

2ndly, the Jimny is nice & light, so you are less likely to tear a sidewall that a heavy Disco or LC200 etc.

I went for the LT spec Grabber AT3’s. Grip well in dry and wet, haven’t been able to test them anywhere else yet due to technical difficulties.
