MalMan, the Voortrekkers did not do what they did for fun or enjoyment. They were trying to get away from the oppressing and depressing Brits and other "Uitlanders" like Porras ......

The LC200 that you mention does not fall under the category that my original rant was about, merely due to the fact that is is NOT a modern SUV.

Lets get this straight - I have nothing against the guys buying these abortions ....................... my issue is with manufacturers trying to blend sports cars with SUVs, ending with a vehicle that cannot perform either of the tasks properly and will get it's arse handed to it by a proper version of either end of the spectrum. Multipurpose tools - be it pocket knives or cars - never perform perfectly in most of the intended uses. A leatherman is, however, a lot cheaper and less "in your face" than a RR Sport (or whatever the Indians call the performance version), GL60 AMG or a Jeep GC SRT8 .......................

I was standing outside the office, getting my nicotine fix, when I noticed a brand new Range Rover at the access control booms to the estate and for the first time really looked at it. The GQ man in the article that Alex posted in the "Recovery Gear" thread came to mind.

WTF ????? What is the idea of a love child between an Off-Road vehicle and a Sports Car about? It makes about as much sense as man boobs - useless and usually FUGLY. Porsche started this trend with the Pepper and just about every other manufacturer jumped on the bandwagon. FFS, the things have no ground clearance, runs on 20 aspect ratio run-flat tyres that are worthless even on South African highways, let alone dirt roads or, Heaven forbid, off-road trails. If you want to barrel around at 200+ km/h on the school run, buy a bloody BMW "M" or Merc AMG platkar. It'll be better at the job and you will not be bluffing yourself that you own an off-road vehicle.

To each his own, but I am of the opinion that Alex's GQ man's requirements have phucked up the market ......................

Unfortunately it's the way the top SUV market is headed.

We had the chance to drive the RRS, and a few other LR's. Lovely to drive, but I don't like the shape and inside space. But the worst is cameras all over to spot rocks in your path, at your side etc and needing to look at a screen to see whats around you, does not do it for me.

I prefer a spotter and to see the road ahead.

My personal experience with friends the bought up-market SUV`s and Platkar type DC bakkies is that they reduce their 4x4 outings to almost zero.
I mean who can blame them. Dents and scratches on vehicles on the other side of R 1mil is not the right thing to do. Those who is still active in 4x4 activities own an older generation 4x4 alongside the SUV.

Christo, I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly - my point is that these "Sports car SUV's" are a compromise in both areas that they try to cover. A sporty sedan would be much better on the open road and a real 4x4 off the road. (and in both cases probably cheaper to buy and maintain too)
