You guys know a lot more than I do

I want a vehicle that rev like a Petrol with plenty of Kw's for the Nam Dunes and at the same time a vehicle with lots of low down Nm's for the rocks in Cape Town.

Something with lots of articulation and dual lockers for show.

I am a family man, so a shorty wont work

Mike for the budget, it’ll have to be an older toy.

It’s hard to argue against a Disco 2 converted to Vortec V8 package like Burnco do. It’ll include lift, beefed up axles & lockers etc, etc, etc.

As tough as they are, if a Cruiser or Patrol does break then it’s gonna hurt. Whereas a D2 is cheap as chips to buy & to fix. That’s why the serious dune guys use them almost exclusively. They are also cheaper to modify.

Mike mentioned Namib dunes. Some of these dune drive trips are six day trips, you need something reliable. Recovering a 4x4 300km into the Namib desert can bankrupt you :o

I do agree modified D2`s are nice when you play close to home.

Landy Dealer location is a problem. You do very seldom see a modified Disco`s in the Namib our Namibian counterparts here will second me on this one.

With a D2 you don’t need a dealer, just a half decent mechanic.

I meant a dealer for spares. :D We once left a D2 on a farm near VanZylsrust in the Kalahari. Could only recover it 3 weeks later with all parts sourced.
Waterpump failed and set the fan into the radiator. Nearest Dealer were only 360km away (Upington) . Waiting time for some of the spares 2 weeks. Quick 500km return trip to fix and fetch.

As I do travel to remote areas quite often I tend to worry about availability of spares.

As said earlier in the thread I had to travel 480km back and fourth last year at Whooopa to source wheel bearings for a Dana 44 with HD hubs on the Yank Ranger. Not even Upington had stock.

Maybe it is only me that worry about stuff like this.

I had a radiator problem once , viscous seized , fan blades into radiator. Temp fix from any spares shop , BMW , Nissan fan , bent radiator pipes closed , and drove back ;)

And when the nearest spare shop is 240km from Van Zyls. Still an almost 500km round trip.

I have done my share of Namib trips. Once you have done such a trip you will realise the almost impossible logistics.

As much as I trust my Yank Ranger and as much as I would like to take it to those huge Namib dunes I know what a a recovery deeo in the Namib desert mean.

Maybe I just does not have the guts or experience have trained me different

If Mike only wants to play close to home almost anything will go

Grips , any 4x4 can have a breakdown ! New or old ! And if the closest spares shop is 240km away , You have a problem ! Does not matter what you drive ! Unless you cart a trailer full of spares with you ! I do carry a few basic stuff with , not a full list of spares though.
