I have owned several 4x4 's, Patrols, SFA Hilux' s, Cruiser, Fords and currently 70 series Cruisers.

After some very long and hard thinking, taking dealer networks and parts availability in account Toyota Land Cruiser win my day. New generation 4x4's just do not do it for me. Very few out there that can survive constant travelling of our poor NC dirt roads.

Think l will own the Cruisers till and after retirement.

I started with a swb SFA, Defender 90. Awesome little car.

Reliability made me lose my way to a Triton bakkie.

Had no engine problems but when playing a bit stuff tended to break.

It couldn’t go where I wanted it to. Sold it and bought a 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ.

Back to swb SFA that is what playing is about for me.

Added some more mods and now this little thing can really play.

Also bought swambo a d4d fortuner terrible at 4x4ing compared to the TJ by the way

Nissan Navara 2.3 SE 4x4 D/C

Did not want the amarok - I enjoy reversing once in a while. Lack of engine cover put me off.

X-class Merc too expensive

Hardbody's ride too harsh.

I stared with a series III 109 - custom built a for V6 into it, re did everything bull bar, roof rack, hub winches etc, but at the end of the day, using 3/4 of a tank to get to Pilansberg wasn't worth it.

Had a Mitsubishi after that, it was useless. Don't go there.

Got the Hard body, started planing upgrades and kept it till I stuffed up my back and could not drive it on tar never, mind off road.

Tested a D3 which worked for me, and then found the D3 G4, which I can use off road, and as an alternate SueAnne got the D4.
The reason for the G4 is that I got it for the same price as a standard D3 with all the extras thrown in which I would have fitted anyway.

Grew up with Chevs and later Toyota Stout bakkies, they went everywhere you needed to, in 4x2.
Then the Chev Nomads and Hilux 4x4 bakkies opened the way to get you to places you did not know you wanted to get to... in the Eastern Cape mountains.

Over the years we had various vehicles, Isuzu double cab, very comfy and great tow vehicle, then Mitsu Colt Rodeo (too long) and then a ‘95 Pajero 2.8 in which we discovered a lot of places together.
At some point I heeded the urge to rebuild a Series 2a Pickup, and spent a year with my boys getting it back into working condition from a piece of scrap. That gave us a lot of pleasure too.

Then had a 3.2 DID Pajero LWB which eventually became mom’s taxi because I found a lovely Suzuki SJ410, it already had a Nissan 1400 and 5sp gearbox conversion and went everywhere. The Suzuki and my Son’s CJ6 which he restored from the chassis up allowed for a lot of play and fun.
Eventually long distances of traveling to work got me to “upgrade” to the Jimny, it took a bit of convincing before I could let the SJ go,

Later we have had a 3.8 Jeep Wrangler lwb come and go, while amazing as a 4x4, they are almost too boring offroad (point and go anywhere) and definitely not suited to commuting.
The Jimny has stayed around the longest, and is still causing a smile every time I get in it. And it has been almost everywhere as well. Sometimes towing a trailer with 4 people inside. Not necessarily comfortable for the rear passengers, but do-able.

The bug 1st bit in 2005. I was given a gift by my then 2nd wife.2005 Colt Rodeo 2.8tdi. What a lovely vehicle. Got the vehicle on 7000km. One if the 1st trips was 3 provinces as a novice.
2007 upgraded to Toyota Hilux 30d4d. Called him Stallone, huge upgrade from the Mitsu. And i wanted a new modern vehicle. My 1st trip was Berakah folowed by Botswana.
2009 upgraded to a 2009 Toyota Hilux. Just because it had lower kilos and i knew the capabilities of this vehicle. The 1st trip was 3 provinces again and thats when i met the likes of Andrew Van Staden. Hercules Pieterse and John Angelblooms. Much was learnt from these Icons.
It was in 2013 that i met Kurt Gerber , Neil Botha and Mannaman Mathew Green for the 1st time.
Well in 2010 i took position in Zambia and opted for a Toyota Surf at 4k USD..Only because it was chwap.Drove ir for a ywar and then upgraded..wait for it..Ford F250..Just because i loved ita sheer size and i could load half a dozen guys and pull the boat.
When i got back to.SA in 2013 I still had the Hilux(Rocky) which sadly was shopped out of the parking lot at Makro in Centurion only to be found a month later in Messina.
Well then it was Hello to Rambo.1996 Mitsu 3.5V6.bought onky becauae it was a secondary car and a toy..and yws i had a lekker time with it.But with all old cars..there is constant repairs and fix me ups..bang it got sold and i briefly bought a Mitsu Colt 2007.V6..Jut to cruise around. Money talks and sild it for a 30k profit 3 weeks later.
Then came Silver. A 1998 Toyota Prado 3.4V6 toy.
Lekker suspension great flex and lotsa power. Conquered Koos ae klim with him and had a great time.
It got sold as i needed cash flow for a business.
It's been about 5 months now and im proper4x4loos.
But the Cobra shall rise again. Soon. I have attached some pics of the buggers through the

After I wrote off my first car, I bought my first 4x4 which was an SJ410, with a shot motor, because I liked the look of it. I did a lot of playing with it, and it got a couple of upgrades...Nissan 1500 motor and gearbox, and OME suspension. It was my daily driver until the carb started giving me shit, and I couldn't figure it out, so bought a platkar so I could get around (The fix to the carb was one jet at around R5 at the time). a few years later, I saw a beautiful Jeep XJ, going for a song, so traded the trusty little Corsa for endless problems and expense. I had my eye on the Jimny from the time they were launched and 10 years later, I bought one of the first to land. I'm now on my second one. I sold the SJ about a year ago to Wooky.

My 1st 4x4 was my Jeep XJ, why did I buy it, well simply because it's almost indestructible and its cult like following. My previous employer had two which I drove from time to time and always wanted one since then. With time the family grew and so the XJ became too small for our touring requirements. With a rooftop tent, extra jerry cans and sometimes 2nd spare on the roof, everything else stuffed in the back of the Jeep and in a trailer.

We simply had to get something bigger and as reliable as the Jeep. So I bought an Isuzu KB300 4x4 Dteq. Don't know how it performs off-road yet (only done gravel thus far), it's a bit on the low side or maybe it's those plastic side bars (can't call it rock sliders, it will certainly brake the 1st rock it encounters).

My official 4x4 life started in 2010 (before that all 4x4’s belonged to the company so those don’t count) when I bought a Gwm steed 2.4 petrol, joined the forum same time and met a hip of great people and a few not so great people, had a accident with the steed about 3 years later and then I bought another new steed 2.0vgt diesel, drove that for a few years and almost died a few times for driving over the front bumper
After that enter the Navara, kitted it out for camping and it was used mainly as a family get away 4x4, it was a towing champion and that’s what it was used for, also unfortunately had a accident with it this year and it was written off (me and my luck)
Since the Navara was a off road machine of note I decided to step it down and got a Jeep XJ as a 4x4 toy, after the accident I only had the Jeep to drive around and as we know it doesn’t really have the best fuel consumption out there so that forced me to get another 4x4.
So now I bought a 2013 fortuner (ya I know I know) auto 4x4, and so far so good, wife and kids very happy as am I

That’s my 4x4 story
