Ek dink dit is andersom.

Hoekom anders sal mens amper 'n miljoen betaal vir 'n nuwe 79 wat net mooi niks tech in het nie?

I drive a 2010 Fortuner.
It has very little tech.
I never use the steering buttons.
It has VSC and ABS but I have never felt them work.
The OBD is more of an opinion than accurate Temp and Fuel data.
It has no reminder chimes.

Absolutely. Toyota hasn't added much to the 70 series since 1984 so I fail to understand why an old ox wagon costs so much. I reckon it's because there isn't anything out there any more that can handle what it can , so they charge what they feel like : no direct competition.........

I see it this way. I won't mind paying a bar for a vehicle that would last 20 years if looked well after.

My KB280DT cost me R122000 when new & has lasted 22 years & 440 000km.
My KB300TDi is nearly 20 years old, but with only 255000km.

My vehicle is 21 years old this year. It has a bit of bush rash - which is understandable with the roads it has travelled. Sitting at around 440k km, I think. On it's second clutch and I did engine mountings at the same time as I did the clutch. A few other electrical consumables - like alternators (alternators are the Patrols' Achilles heel) and starters. I wont mention the fuel... But that is probably about it...

The 4.5 GRX was a super luxurious barge when that model came out back in the late 90's. It has dual zone airconditioning, sun-roof etc. But the schmanciest thing on it is probably the ABS - which is a mixed blessing as ABS is not that lekker on dirt roads. Still, for an old-school luxury barge, it has very little... But so times change...

The only "luxuries" in the vehicle:

Part-time 4x4 with LR. Used: A lot.
Rear diff-lock. Used: Quite a bit.
Sun roof. Used: A lot (even with the roof rack, I like having it open).
Electric Windows. Used: A lot (so that I can give lesser drivers "the bird" when the skip the 4-way stops).
Leather seats. Used: Presumably a lot, but I have seat covers.
Split-zone Aircon. Used: Quite a lot, but not currently - I need to replace the compressor. Had it refurbished but that did not work that well. No aircon currently.
Stereo. Used: barely.

Etc.

I think one has to define technology. Things like "lane assist" and "cruise control" and similar, are all tech. It's not stuff I use. But the most amazing tech in the Patrol is actually in the design, drive-train and underneath the bonnet. Stupid things like "vacuum" pods for the diff-lock / clutch etc. They even have non-return valves in the piping so that if you lose vacuum it does not affect the vehicle's idling. Patrols are really over-engineered. But fancy electrical fan-boi things they lack completely. And by that, I mean the Y60/Y61 Patrols - not the Y62's,

Let me ask a different question.

You walk into a dealership. Any dealership for that matter.

You choose your vehicle. The salesmen/women then puts a list of optional creature comforts in front of you. What would you choose? I'm not talking about 4x4 accessories, creature comforts. Things like wireless chargers, 360 degree cameras, tooshie warmers/coolers in seats. Stuff like that

Ah... Nothing thanks.

No push buttons. Manual. With "kort stokkie" etc.

Unless it is Super Select...

Well driving an older Fortuner, and a Jimny, you rely on skill. I am now fitting a semi button clutch, and I rely on a TRE air locker on the rear.

When I ordered my VW (non 4x4 platkar) in 2011 I saved just over R100k on the price of a similar vehicle that had just landed in the country. I opted not to have the glass sunroof, look around corners headlights that follow steering input, electric seats and numerous other little gadgets that I would never have used. Was a decent saving.
Corrected the amount.
