This 'weekend' will last until 24 Sep, going for a +- 4800km round-trip like this --> Pta - Lichtenburg - Upington - Pella - Tierhoek - Richtersveld - Oranjemund - Luderitz (taking the D707) - Tiras mountains - Sossusvlei - Mariental - Stampriet - Gochas (via the D503) - Aroab - Hakskeenpan - Askham - Upington - Pretoria.
When planning this trip, I had a few goals in mind:
- visit Richtersveld again, last time was just too short! And maybe we can see some late flowers this time...
- spend more than one night at Sossusvlei, to have enough time for sunrise and sunset pics of the dunes
- drive the D503 which, according to that 'other' forum, is one of the "MOST scenic trax in Namibia"
- drive on Hakskeen pan and show those puny petrol powerplants what an Isuzu diesel in full cry looks like!!![]()
Roll on Friday!!
This trip sounds amazing
Life will take you where ever you want it to take you...as long as you drive a 4x4

but clocked nearly spot-on 6000km over 6 weeks.
so extra recce kms at many of the stops which by design
mainly 2 or more nights.
At Kakaboomkloof my gearstick broke off near the
ball in the tunnel
This was a problem.
Fitted a socket over the little stub and used my 1/2” drive bar as a gearstick to Sendellingsdrif where had welding job done.
‘n Engelsman makin plan ‘ etc …

… on the same loop trip as above Peter1949 Hutchinsons alternator packed up, near Vioolsdrift, in his KB250 (?) Isuzu.
We put 2 parallell 100w (?) solar panels on his roof and they kept his battery alive and so too his fuel pump going till he got to Upington or somewhere for a replacement.

Going to Mapungubwe for the long weekend, booking in tomorrow afternoon, staying in the Vhembe cabins https://www.sanparks.org/parks/mapungubwe/accommodation - it's strictly speaking not really camping, but part of the little houses are canvas, so I'm claiming it! We booked all 4 cabins last year with a Black Friday special, so got it for half-price, bargain!
We're leaving at 13h00 today, hopefully before the mass exodus north, coming back Monday afternoon.
Tonight we will be camping at https://www.lekkeslaap.co.za/akkommodasie/piet-my-vrou at the Waterbok site to wait for the rest of the convoy who are leaving Pta tomorrow morning - no other sites have been booked, so looks like we'll be the only people in the whole place!
