Rechardt - this is what I do. The only reason I may use a guide is for concession-type trips. ie: As I said - I've got a desire to drive up to the Cunene via Skeleton Coast. That is unfortunately, not something one can do without a guid.

Having read Ratel's post on FB, I feel for them, if they're being honest, but...
...if you're going to arrange and lead tours, and charge a fee for doing so, you need to
a) have a reliable vehicle to do so.
b) have reliable comms, no matter where you find yourself.
c) have contingency plans and suitable back-up in the form of vehicles, guides etc.
d) have the ability to sort out any issues, major or minor, quickly, and with the minimum disruption to your clients.
d) ensure your clients have all the details, booking information, invoices, proof of payment and other paperwork, alternative contact details etc well in advance.
I doubt I could do the above, but then I'm not leading tours.

if anything their long sad tale of despair made me less likely to ever use them....

Every story has 3 sides - mine, yours and the truth - which is usually a combination of the first two.
I read their story and while I have empathy - I also cannot afford the f.u that ultimately happened in lesotho.
Time and money don't allow for this.
It is what it is.

I see Ratel started a Back A Buddy fund so that they can buy a new Bakkie.
Seems like a common way for Tour guides to fund their tour vehicles....
