If someone on a limited budget asked for recommendations for something like an Etios for his job as a long-distance rep, everyone would suggest he rather buy a used BMW or other more luxurious vehicle.

But 30 years ago we (all of us) drove between the major centres in things like Nissan 1400's, Toyota Corona's, Golf 1's, Cortina
's & Escoursts & obviously the Chevs of the day (2500, 4100 etc) & Volksie Beetles etc.

A mate used to drive to CT once a month in the Mini (the original, not the re-bodied BMW of today) when you couldn't buy fuel at night or carry more than 5 litres with you - he had to plan it so he could drive, stop, throw in the 5 litres, then get to Colesburg as the petrol station was opening, so he could fill up & then try make Beaufort Wes...

We all need to HTFU...

For a capable 4*4 on IFS I think you need to /have to have a suspension -lift system on call ... typically pneumatic lift ... just those 2 things: IFS & lift set-up is a lot more complexity and that before you get to Traction/stability control etc etc
... and complex electronic monitoring and control
etc etc ...
take mechanics out of the realm of everday off-roader ...
Does one want all this complexity(+cost!)
in off-roading ???
Servicing and repair etc requires dedicated specialists
and the ownership costs rockets.
On that dark day when my TD5 motor packs-up
I’ll probably go ReCon 300TDI motor and
(probly) a back locker to keep up w the newbies...
... Famous Fiver VoorLoper ...
... Veni Vidi Vici ...
