Radios/aerials and placing ...

Post by BushWacker »

VHf radio s power and range depends amongst other thing on the Watts and aerial set-up eg handhelds may be <5W and fixed10w
... 10W with outside good aerial may have
range of 4 , 6 or more of hand held
esp if later is used ‘in-cab’ ...
Outside aerial is dedicated type and length
to given radio ie VHF vs Bosvarks etc etc
ie it is matched ...
Fixed radio must be located :
so driver can see and change panel etc
so its out of way and doesnt get broken
so that power and esp aerial leads can be
neatly routed and ‘led-off’

Aerial set-up is as if not more important than
radio type etc
right length
high up
not subject to serious damage in garages etc 😦
also aerial lead should be properly connected and not kinked on its routing... shorting btwn core and sheath/earth can blow the radio ...

... ... guy ‘ Fluffy ‘ tested/ knows about BosVarks etc ...

LRoC dont advocate or use BosVark on Policy
as they want uniformity of eqpmt ...
and good comms ie clear, good range and reliable
etc etc

Aerials are not just about connectors ...
Aerial length etc make vhf aerial different to UHF ...
not interchangeable ...
Aerial lengths are in relation to the amplitude of
the radio wave theyre designed to receive !
Also in case of 29MHz aerial there may be a winding/length of ‘aerial’ you dont see !
