FJ cruiser starter issues after mud pit

#1

Post by LesseW »

Last weekend I took my FJ through a mud pit, it was fun and all was well until Monday.....

I assume my starter took a hammering with the mud since it does not want to turn every so often. Battery is full and working.

The FJ’s starter sits in an awkward place, has anyone removed one before? Else, any Cruiser mechanics that you can suggest?

Avoid mud... and water.

Have you cleaned all the mud off properly?

What does it do when 'It refuses to turn'..?
Just click, click, krrrrr.. ?
Or is it dead. Like there's no battery...?

Probably got some mud inside. Best is to service that thing. Else the dried dirt will consume that starter.

First check connections. Could be a connection that got corroded by water. I will start investigating the connections on the starter first. Bad solenoid connection have the symptoms you describe. If not mud or water in the starter

Agree with Grips

Always first check all connections
And make sure battery terminals are clean

Other wise mud in starter but starters are generally fairly good insulated from the elements

50% of the time the starter works, 25% of the time not even a click and the other 25% the solenoid clicks but no start.

I pressure washed the engine, from the top and bottom. Getting to the starter is difficult but i got my pressure washer in there.

Did you walk the obstacle before driving into it?
My opinion, no one should drive through something like that with a vehicle that the are not prepared to destroy completely. To drive into something like that with a normal vehicle is crazy.

Wise words.

Manny always k@k on me for going too slow. I have paid the price. Thirty six years of serious 4x4. I have the trophies to show. Stripped diff's, gearboxes, transfer cases and too that add a good lot of side shafts.

Pitty fun comes with a price

Wessel double check that you have cleaned out all mud from the radiators. They tend to clogg up and bite you sometime later
