4x4 Action Group

We often need to work under our vehicles and there’s equipment and techniques & ways...
We need to do it safely and have enough head-room to get down under and get the job done.
To kick off this discussion thread here’s some pictures below ....
I often use Normal Extendable stands and or Tree- trunk Blocks ...
The third picture below shows adjustable 4-legged stands for each wheel ; with a Hi-Lift
jack one could get car up to a fair elevation ...

I know the first picture, It comes straight out of the old Fortuner service manual. Apparently those Fortuners could tilt to those gradients quite easily.

I like the idea in the third picture, but would modify the stands to fit a scissor or bottle jack within the stand - giving you the freedumb to jack up each wheel individually.

The last picture is just reckless. It will not stop a vehicle IMO from swaying side to side - perhaps a bigger base plate with 45 degree supports would make it a better proposition.

the lower two studs of the hub.

Given one doesnt have a walk-under
vehicle lift or pit ...
then lie-under alternatives only really need the car underside to be about arms length high to use spanners e.g. on what are often v. tight/ frozen bolts...

Yip, our vehicles pose a major problem for me because of the height. My 2 ton trolley jack does not even get to my diff pipes, and can hardly lift one wheel at a time. I have three of these jacks, and not one is up to the task. Putting it on stands is even worse. My normal stands are on the highest setting to to get the wheel a mere 30mm off the ground. When needing to mimic ride height, I only have one solution. I push my 500mm high ramps under the chassis, add a nice block of wood between the ramp and the chassis. I only need to lift the car about 20mm to get the wood in there. This gets my rig perfectly level, and to it's exact ride height, and use the Hi-Lift, which is the only jack that can do anything meaningful in the jacking department with the Sani. It has also forced me t make sure my bumper, bullbar and rocksliders are strong enough for this job.

Two ton trolley jacks does not work on 4x4`s. I have found you need to use more truck like jacks. I have 5t trolleys and truck trestles.
Also built my own gearbox jack from a 5t trolley jack.
I never uses a high lift in my workshop simply to unstable an dangerous. Have build a mobile type crane to pull engines and lift anything out of reach for a jack.
I am very safety conscious when working under vehicles. Never uses a jack as only support. Will fit trestles under chassis and diffs to make sure it is secured.

Think a 4 post lift is the thing to have.

Grips would you mind posting a pic or two of your gearbox jack?

Very simple construction. I use a ratchet strap to secure the gearbox on the stand. The bolt is to make it easier to line up the gearbox

Why all the fuss about jacks and stands and stuff. This is how you do it!

My brother has a proper lift.
To drop the box he has a board that hangs on the two sides of the lift. he then uses a jack to lower the box down.
Nothing beats a lift... but, when fearless is on the lift you can't stand on the ground and see in the engine bay...
