A gem until it blows a turbo, Mike. I have heard of plenty going wrong under 50,000km.
I’ve heard of this happen. Not to me though, luckily.

I drove mine for 7 years and 140000kms without any issues.

I also didn’t drive it like I stole it

Exactly. The only 3.2's I have heard of with blown turbos and fubar transmissions were driven like there was no tomorrow.

That 3.2 is by far the best diesel motor (read SUV and Bakkie) on the market today.

Gerhard Oosthuizen from SAC in Centurion had to replace his first turbo on his 3.2 at 4500km, then again after that (can’t recall the mileage).

That’s without any engine mods or chip, it was his personal vehicle.

That’s just one that I can recall.

Dries De Jager from Waltons (Bidvest) commutes 150km everday (monday to friday) with his Ford 3.2 (2013 model) - It has just shy of 250k km on it and never blown a turbo.

On weekends it serves as a plaasbakkie, and it gets bliksemd often with heavy loads and towing trailers in excess of 2 tons.

Engine power and torque on paper and engine power and torque in practise is a huge difference. The best tow vehicles were and still are the ones with the large capacity engines.

If you have a look at truck engines they have huge displacement with not that high power and torque out puts. My Samil 50 had a normal aspirated 9.8l diesel with 138kw @2500rpm and 600nm @ 1500rpm. The v6 Amarok looks better on paper. I know which one will be able to tow the heaviest load.
Yes I know ratios also comes into account but one can tow 6 tons up an incline and the best one on paper won`t.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

OK back on topic...

Topic is that a smaller TD is often not as good a tow vehicle as a bigger capacity TD.

The 3.2 vs 2.0 Ford Ranger motors being a great example..

I’d agree with that sentiment. With 5 up, boot loaded & with a roof rack, I get around 9L/100km with my 1.5 diesel, which isn’t good.

What would your consumption be after hitching a 1,5 ton trailer?

I reckon more than 12L/100. The reason being I read a test with a 1050 kph caravan where the guy got an average of 9.5L & a max of 11L. So a 1500kg caravan would increase that significantly.

Tow rating is 750 kg or 1500 kg braked.
