Good points you make Apoc ! I agree with you ? One question though , dont you think the goverment / motor industy in SA is to blame for a lot of these problems ? You have been forntunate enough to travel a bit , to " first" world countties ?
They do not spend as much as we do on their vechiles , percentage wise. Spares are way cheaper for them to replace , and please do not convert US dollars to rands ! They earn dollars there !!
We get taxed here on everything that comes in . So , now i have to replace DPF fiters etc . My brothers Tdi Jetta gave a warning on Dashboard , Particular filter faulty . VW wanted R45k
That to me is a ripp off !! A quick youtube shows how to clean it. Reset comp on car . Less than R1500 ?
So , if it happens to someone less technical , he will agree to have it removed ??
This is why i blame dealers and motor industry in general.
I might be wrong ???
Just my opinion

... what amuses me is these Cape folk preaching concern about emissions & environmental issues
... mean while they mostly drive :
Mega-capacity Jeeps,
Belching Land-Cruisers
and other Road-Warrior type contraptions ... etc
 :geek:  :geek:
A big engined 4x4 with functioning emissions control is far cleaner than even a hybrid without. It's also interesting to note that shitty little eco boxes with small engines and a 5 year life span have a far bigger carbon footprint over it's manufacture and usable life is no better than a heavy 4x4 with a 25 year realistic usable life span.

Don't you think we should all be trying to reduce our pollutive habits while maintaining our lifestyle?
I read an article a number of years ago, not long after the launch of the first Prius, that documented the environmental costs of a Jeep TJ vs a Prius for the entire lifespan of the vehicles, including the manufacturing process, fuel consumption, disposal / recycling. The Jeep won.

I have deleted EGR fitted a free flow thus removing the cats on the 76 V8.
On the 76 V8 there are no oxygen sensors to tell the ECU when the cats are blocked. The Cruisers in Australia have a different system with all the smart Cat goodies and clean burning function.
Some of the remote places in the Northern Cape still have only 500ppm available. Cats don`t like 500ppm.
All Voetspore Cruisers have free flows fitted and EGR`s deleted to run 500ppm.

Untill Africa has 10ppm or 50ppm available all over I am afraid that, when you go across our borders you are somehow forced to abandon certain emission devices. Not doing it you have a chance of damaging engines.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

... yes ... I think this is it :

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-styl ... 23233.html

... but note that, iro the study, although the article stresses :

“ The Americans say 80 per cent of the energy
a car uses is accounted for by manufacture
and 20 per cent in use:
Toyota claims the reverse. ... “

... I think the article largely reflects
the American finding !

... and Saxj as I stated in note #27:

“ ... The ‘clean big burners ‘ theory is incongruous with the Japanese encouragement and incentivisation of Kei Cars ... “

... and now who was it that I heard
owned a Prius ??? ... !!!
