Madman is the way to go. One must remember that on diesel engines with pre chambers EGT is more of a problem. Think we must ask Jan Slabber to explain.

Reenen, there is no delayed average reading on the madman. Different egt probes give faster or slower readings.

Not at all. If you use one of the 3mm probes on the market, it is more sensitive and the readings rise and fall very quickly. if you use a 5 or 6mm probe tip, they are generally quite a bit slower.

Heres an Independent Monitoring System of a different kind ...
Im likely behind the times on prevailing technology but this package of conditions
that need prevail for tyres/wheels is no doubt very beneficial for long-life, even wear , safety etc
Tyre manufacturers/sellers probably dont like it.
System is evidently part of the new Polo but these systems will surely become beneficial to all from now on ...
.......... :
“ The Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator uses data from the ABS sensors and other functions to check the speed of rotation and the rolling circumference of the individual wheels. Any change in the rolling circumference of one or more wheels is shown by the Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator in the instrument cluster.
The rolling circumference of a tyre can change:
If the tyre pressure has been changed manually.
If the tyre pressure is too low.
If the tyre has structural damage.
If the vehicle is loaded more heavily on one side.
If the wheels on one axle are loaded more heavily, e.g. high load level.
If snow chains have been fitted.
If a temporary spare wheel has been fitted.
If one wheel per axle has been changed.
In certain circumstances, the Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator may become slow or may not display anything, e.g. with a sporty driving style, in winter driving conditions, on unpaved roads, or when driving with snow chains.
on the ignition.
If the wheels are loaded more heavily than normal, e.g. if the vehicle is carrying heavy payload, the tyre pressure must be raised to the recommended full-load tyre pressure before synchronisation .”

Chas, this German system has been in use for years and it's a load of crap.
It is basically a 'Tyre Circumference Calculator' - it doesn't measure pressure.
BMW brought this crap idea out when they launched another even crapper idea - Run-Flat tyres.
The problem is two tyres on the same axle must have the same circumference - if that changes it detects a problem.
So, if you have reasonably warn tyres& get a flat, if you fit one new tyre, it picks up the discrepancy & flags the opp tyre as flat.
In theory, if you got a puncture on both tyres at the same time (unlikely, I know) as they both go flat the system won't signal an issue.
I prefer a system that actually measure pressure (& heat)...

I find the set of various destabilising conditions that the system continuously indirectly monitors to be quite relevant ...
5 Tyres these days cost upwards of R15k to R20k so getting extended life and/or avoiding losing a tyre through shredding due to a fast deflation is a real benefit.
But , yes, I would still carry a pressure gauge in my glovebox ...

Randomly coming back to Temp & Pressure monitors for tyres that one can buy and install from the aftermarket ... Does anyone here have and get good use from these ?
What type and brand to go with ?
I'm mainly interested in readily fitted,
externally mounted ones...

I'm not sure what readily fitted externally mounted means.
The best ones involve tyre removal to fit the sender unit.
Andreas bought some online that were cheap and seem OK.
I'll ask him to come read here.
He, like many others, skips your posts due to the deliberately diversionary sentence structure that discourages reading.
I'll edit your post's readability and call him...

I took a chance and bought a no name brand off Bangggood or Wish. Cost was about $20. Has external monitors and is solar powered. So far seems to work fine. Replacement monitors are available.

Thanks Andreas ... I see here they cost anywhere from R500 to a few thousand ...
Will just choose one and try it out too.
To be effectively forewarned of deteriorating tyre-state increasingly seems, to me, to have important safety and likely economic benefits ...
