Isuzu Tank Travesty... Advice Please...
One of my Isuzu's - the 2003 KB300 DT LX S/Cab with 196 000km has developed a
problem:
we filled up a few weeks ago & noticed diesel leaking out for a few days.
We assumed it was a loose or split overflow or something.
Asked my Mechanic/Brother to check it out. He found nothing.
But he suspected a steel crack where filler pipe enters tank.
Next fill up it was much worse.
So we dropped the tank.
Basically there is a baffle around the fuel pick up to protect it from slopping fuel or a siphon pipe.
The baffle has broken loose & has smashed the fuel pick up, causing it to tear the tank.
We can easily fix the tank, but we cant get in to re-secure the baffle.

This is what I have done:
I called Bugger & asked his advice - he suggested taking it to Silverton Radiators for a repair.
I went to Isuzu - new tank is only R1 850.00 - but it is no longer stocked.
I called Paul#25 - he suggested a bakkie's spares place in Wynberg - I still need to track them down.
I tested the Great Sakkie - he gave me details of two spares places; A1 Bakkie Spares in PTAWest & SUMP of Springs.
I called both - neither have stock.
I then went to Northern Offroad in Strijdom Park - They will contact me with a quote.
Any other intelligent suggestions, please...?

I would also suggest Silverton radiators, they have successfully repaired a fuel tank for me years ago

Northern Off Road said they can fix it.
Despite Silverton Radiator's website info - it seems there is a branch in Strijdom Park...
I'll take it in tomorrow.

OK, this morning I found Silverton Radiators Strijdom Park.
Mainly thanks to Chas - as the interweb lists them as being on CR Swart, or on Tungston or in Gerhardus st Strijdom Park, I found Silverton's Randburg.
They are NOT listed on www.silvertons.co.za - methinks they haven't been paying their franchise fee.
I drove down the alley, parked, a staffer was pressure testing the radiator on a hot BMW hatch, the Indian client was standing next to machine.
I said "The cause is too much Vooorrrr Pah! - you've stuffed the motor"... and went in.
A tired-looking forlorn guy stood behind the counter.
"What the hell is wrong with you? You look like crap, did you drink all night?" I greeted.
"No' he replied.
"You are not the owner, where is the owner?" I demanded.
"Not here." He pleaded.
"I'm willing to bet he is never here! Am I right?"
"Yes..."
"OK, come outside & cheer up, I have a job for you!"...
I got on the bakkie & handed him the tank, explained what was required & said "Fix it".
He said no problem.
I asked how much.
He said it would be roughly, about, more or less, R1340.00...
...Ex VAT...
I said "Today?"
He said "No, Monday"
I said "Fok!" & left...

So... to be clear...
The tank is steel, about 400mm wide, 300mm high & nearly 1300mm long.
Not sure how that gives me 75liters though... ?
They need to split the tank - there is horizontal a seam running around the center.
Fix the take-up & return.
Re-weld the baffle around both.
Then fix the tear in the tank where the take-up & return enter the tank.
Then put the two parts of the tank together.
Then we will refit the gauge & filler & pop it back in.
Hopefully it will back in service on Tuesday.
I running 4 sites on Monday & Tuesday & 3 on Wednesday & Thursday - luckily I have spare vehicles, but I'll need it...

Sometime back I went to the Silverton guys in Strijdom Park with my rusty RRover Classic Tank.
They took similar approach, splitting the tank open along the waist seam so it coud be partially opened ‘Oyster Style’ (... not a sexual act ...!) and the inside sand-blasted and cleaned.
They then close-up and solder the perimeter again.
In my case they also used a fancy 3M Petrol-resistant sealant ... ‘as now used in old aircraft tanks (!
)
Most of their work seems to be, as expected, standard radiator cleaning, repair and replacement esp for older vehicles .
Today's modern radiators are more efficient and readily replaceable consumer items ... so Silvertons traditional craft is probably less applicable.
Strijdom Park guys also do cleaning and some modifying (eg. removing flow restrictions in) of intercoolers etc.
