I have an old 1975 warn 8274 winch
that looks very like this and Ive been told
this used a starter motor but g-box and spool are obviously properly integrated ....

I might be a bit off target with this but what I understand is that in winches there are two different types of electric motors used.
The more powerful winches use series wound motors while the ATV type winches use permanent magnet motors.
I think stater motors are permanent magnet type motors and not as powerful as the series motors but do draw less current.

There could be a risk of burning it out as they arent designed for long runs...

MAybe if you find a starter from a stop-start vehicle, they are built stronger to withstand starting at every robot.

But that’ll take too long to winch. As soon as the vehicle being winched starts moving, the winch will cut out.

I was going to suggest he rather build a land anchor than a winch. Although the starter motor could be used to wind the trailer into the garage roof for storage till restoration.

I grew up with a father who cared little for vehicles, hated maintenance, had little mechanical knowledge & bought crap cars.
Many cold mornings he would crank a reluctant motor relentlessly until it started.
If it didn't start the starter soon flattened the battery. Then the pushing started.
So to answer Craig:
In my view:
With gearing, many motors; starter, windscreen wiper etc. could be used.
But they would either soon burn out or would quickly flatten the battery.
Our epic recovery of MartinDJ on the Road to Hell, where his winch worked for hours, I saw that only an efficient, strong motor with good gearing & a formidable power supply, would work.

Cranking a flywheel vs pulling a 2ton vehicle are two very separate things Craig.
You will burn out that starter motor very quickly.
I would not. Rather have a look at a land anchor as suggested.

I think it is a fair question. A quick search on google will tell you that it is a question that is asked a lot on most 4x4 forums.
Why Craig would want to fit a diy winch to his amper-maar-nog-nie-stamper 4x4 is a totally different question.

The very first winches were in fact build by using starter motors. They dumped the brass bushes on the starters and replaced them with ball or roller bearings.
Comet winches to this day uses modified Ford starter motors.
The old starter motors remote solenoids were perfect for powering winches.
