4x4 Action Group

I have decided to look into Rock Sliders for my Wrangler TJ. I want to, and I am going to, build them myself. OK?

Now I need to know if the sliders should be away from the body or can they be flush against the body.

I would leave a gap big enough to allow for the flex. The size of the gap will depend on how strong you make the slider. There is a nice write up on the other forum where Uys gives a formula of how much deflection there will be based on the expected force applied at impact versus the length between mounting points.

To save time, just make the gap about 15mm and use a very strong tube with a minimum 3mm wall thickness (or steam pipe).

My rocksliders were designed to flex 5mm maximum at 3000N force on a point midway between the two mounting points, much the same as my Pajero’s front heavy duty coils at full “flex”.

These aren’t rock sliders, they are body protectors, very different to the thread title.

But Kurt, ain't it the same thing? Same purpose?

Not really. The slider (if designed properly) can allow you to bash your way over rocks and slide over if need be without causing any damage to your vehicle, body protection will dent and damage what’s underneath if the same forces were applied. There’s a big difference.

As Kurt said, design.

On the D3 my rock sliders cannot be attached to the chassis as this would affect ground clearance and torsional forces.
they run from the front to the back wheel against the body work. I think there are 8 or 10 HT bolts per slider.

I have bent one without any body damage.

Won't 8mm steel plate protect the body? Those in my pics look like 3mm or so.
