Seeing what Reenen is doing on one of his vehicles obviously made me curious. Now I am thinking......hmmmm....if or when I get a toy for 4x4 only, then Portal Axles are the way to go. Yes/No?

Portals are super tough but super expensive. It’ll also be expensive to lift a vehicle high enough to fit them. Then fitting them isn’t straight forward.

You get massive clearance but bugger all articulation. But you’ll also need to wear a kidney belt permanently.

I just wanted to address these - I don't really agree.

Portal axles extend only downwards from a normal axle, not upwards.

With that in mind, you really don't have to lift the suspension at all - the whole vehicle is lifted by moving the wheels further down from the axle.
They neither increase, nor decrease, the inherent articulation of the suspension, assuming everything else stays the same.

However, you could fit much larger wheels, and keep the same articulation that you had, because the larger wheels now have more space before they will rub against the vehicle body.

You're absolutely right in that the increased unsprung mass makes for a worse ride on the road

My reply was a general response to a broad question.

Are you of the belief that portal axel are inexpensive & easy to fit to say, an IFS vehicle without complications? In the case of solid axles you get far more articulation by just enhancing the conventional axle arrangement.

Ok, when we talk expensive, we're talking super expensive, quotes vary from half a bar upwards!

It would certainly not be suitable for an overlander, ground clearance would be as high as you want.

They are as practical and almost as capable as tracs and almost the same price!

I certainly wouldn't mind a set or two in my stocking!

It's less than 20cm.
I also gain another 5-10cm with the smaller diff bulge.

Nobody should pay a couple of hundred K for 25cm extra clearance

For those of you with access to the Land Cruiser Club Forum there is a thread by a guy who has built his own portal axles to fit on a LC80.
