Land Rover P38 Gearbox Removal

Hi All

I need to remove the Gearbox on my 1996 P38 4.6.

It leaking oil out of the round inspection hole on the bellhousing.

I stopped driving it immediately.

Apparently it's either the input shaft seal or a cracked torque converter?

I'll be doing it myself, any suggestions or tips and tricks seeing that it is a Auto?

Cheers

Bunch of pansies...removing the gearbox is easy.

Putting it back right can be a pig of a job though...got that T-shirt.

Remove the motor and 'box as a unit ................ much easier to line everything up afterwards if you are not lying on your back under the vehicle

why not remove box and then
give it to Sean O’Reilly at
Gearbox Co to fix and reinstall ...

... at least you can save
on dropping the box ...

ask for quote estimates first :

remove
refurb
re-install
Total

... on my RRC and defender the
UJ nuts on prop are specific ...
nylocks, (HT? ) and coned at top so
flat (7/16th?) spanner can get in
and turn them about 1/8th turn
at a time ...
none of my ring-spanners etc
can get in those tight places ...
... and not metric

These are similar but it's 14mm.
Also had to use a ring spanner but for the front prop where it connect to the TC you have to use a socket or remove the cross member, hence I just gave up :x

Flex plate shattered, damaged the torque converter and gearbox oil pump.
Torque converter has been sent in for recon and gearbox sent to gearbox guy to sort out the oil pump.
Hoping to have her back by the end of the week or early next week. [emoji1303]
