Series 3 Gearbox

#1

Post by BushWacker »

Ive got a 1975 Series 3 88
which is project vehicle.
The Gearbox - Cluch assembly
doent sound too healthy and chances are
that Ill need to take it out and rebuild.
The drooping gearbox chassis-cross-member
is pretty rusted and battered
being the lowest chassis component...
... so Im going to cut it off
then drill and insert shrink-tubes
in the main chassis beams
to use a bolt-in cross-member
from a defender 🤔 ...

... but benefit is also that I can drop
clutch-gearbox assembly down
instead of up through the seat area.

I suspect ... my gearbox is a ‘crash-box’
from a Series 2 ... no synchromesh ...

Those of you who have experience
in these things ... any advice ...
Bolt-in cross-member good idea ?

Is it worth me rather sourcing an
original series 3 syncrobox , refurbing
and fitting ?

Watdayasay ?????
... Famous Fiver VoorLoper ...
... Veni Vidi Vici ...

I wouldn't alter the chassis. they made it one piece to make it rigid....

Bolt in will suffer more flex.

I'd try and find a series 3 box as well - the synchromesh is well worth it!

You could probably get a decent box from Rob at leimers in kya sands.
Just use a engine hoist and remove out the top, a lot easier than below and a gearbox crushing your head/chest/arm etc.
