Paint Hardness / Durability

#1

Post by BushWacker »

My Defender paint is quite scratch resistant
and durable and even sharp thorn type scratches
seldom get through to th undercoat or Al ...

... what I want to know is what role , if any,
does baking play in conferring this durability
or is it mainly to do with paint type ,
number of coats, other applic processes etc ???

Ive noticed with many DIY jobs that paint
‘veneer’ is v vulnerable to lightest scratches etc.

I’m no expert so this is merely my opinion, but I would guess like anything that needs to be “baked” (like for example ceramics and paint), it means the hardening process is much more effective than air drying, hence the use of baking in the manufacturing process of many things.

I would love to know what the chemical reactions are that can confirm or debunk my opinion above?

its just that Ive often heard that ‘ baking’
by paint shops facilitates fast/full drying and
thus more jobs/day ...

The drying of modern auto paint is actually a chemical process that is aided by higher temperature and low humidity. It's only really powder coating that the part being coated is heated quite a lot. Most if not all new vehicles are painted with water base paint instead of the the 2K type of paint.
