I was reading up on this BFG AT KDR2 All Terrain, then noticed something.

Very few "competition" tyres are street legal. One type that is are the "cut slick" like the Dunlop Formula R tyre. These tyres came about due to one of the Bunny-Hugger groups thinking of a way to stop rallying. They said that rally cars use public roads but are un-roadworthy due to the tyres not being certified for road use. The FIA, rally organisers and the major tyre manufacturers came to an agreement to have tyres that are full racing compound and construction but conform to the minimum standards for road use. The Bunny-Huggers lost.....................

So how do the Dakar competitors do the liaison sections that go on the highways between special stages?

The "Bunny-Huggers" don't know where South America is yet obviously Kurt. They were trying to find any angle to prevent noisy polluting cars from disturbing their bird and Bambi watching in the European forests.

Luckily they don’t have to run them at low pressures. Otherwise they wouldn’t finish the race.

Nope. BFG pretends to make an offroad tyre by contesting such races. But it has a limited application.

I am not going to start the age old argument again. As said I have 4x4`s shot with Maxxis, Coopers and BF`s. I do thousands km`s of dirt road driving every year. Have done a Namib trip of 600km on 0.6 BF`s. Yes I have debaeted on one or two occasions playing in the dunes taking sharp turns. On the other side I lost several of the sand famous tyres with sidewall cuts on gravel roads. I do not use my 4x4`s for dune driving alone.

I do not care what people think about BF`s I have never lost a BF to a sidewall cut. I have few brand new tyres with nasty cuts to show as evidence.
Most of the mines in our area tested all tyres and found BFG to be the best. I will take picks of even 2wd pick-up trucks with BFG fitted.

For what I do BFG all day long.

Just completed a nice West Coast run of well past 2000km. Two fully loaded Cruiser tyers down to 0.6 and 0.8. Did a recce trip of a very old trail do not when it had a 4x4 on it the last time. Nasty rocky patches between the sandy sections. Sure I would have a sidewall cut if I were to run Maxxis like on the Yank Ranger.

BFGs are great, until you go into challenging offroad situations. It’s why you never see them used in challenge vehicles without incident or a set of beadlocks.

Maar, ek totally love my BF BAJA muds, Die actual baja racing bande. Maar teen R13000 n band huidiglik, sal ek nie weer van hulle kan koop...

Well it’s a good thing my Pajero isn’t a challenge vehicle, else I would have chosen the wrong tyres.

One thing I can’t stand about the KO2 though, is the terrible wet tar grip. It’s terrible and I have had to adjust my driving style even in 4H on the Superselect.
