My feeling is that the root should not be modified anymore than packing rocks or moving a log. An obstacle that is beyond my or my vehicles ability should be bypassed and not modified as it will eventually lead to there being no challenges left for the more hard core guys. I've found a route around an area I wasn't prepared to tackle like I did on the river trip earlier this year. I know I'm a newbe to the game and my Disco isn't a rock crawler so I'll rather go around an obstacle that I'm not happy with than bugger it up for others. Areas where we can learn and challenge ourselves are getting fewer by the day as civilisations gobbles up the wilderness areas. Let's leave areas as we find them instead of ironing out all the bumps.

It depends.
On a route (not root

) like Baboon’s you don’t have an option but to modify the route as there is no bypass possible and sometimes the rocks fall down the mountain blocking the road.
On an established route like De Wildt or Hennops then modifying the route is not a good idea as there are always bypasses.

Ok, jy het baboonspas gebruik as voorbeeld.

If others have gone through then nothing more than rock packing is permitted.
You can't call in a grader, soil dump trucks, roller, compactor & then have the route tarred, just because your buddy in an Amarok is struggling...

As ek my eie “roete” gebruik as voorbeeld:
Oop diffs. Dus niks meer as ‘n 3.

So daar is seker geen sulke reels?
Praat meer van 4x4 roetes. Roete is bv n 3, en dan kom n ander ou verby en sê nee, dit is n 5, en verander dit na sy “3”, wat dan eindlik n 2 is.

I'm not sure your are talking about an opinion of the difficulty, or about a route that is changed by chopping/digging/moving packing rocks.
But, if you are talking opinion - there are guidelines about what each grade is, but you'll never get a scientific agreement.
If you are talking alterations - if a route can be changed from a 3 to a 2 buy a few guys in a few hours using what they happen to have brought with them, altering one obstacle - then it probably wasn't a 3 in the first place.

Personally I find the weather & the time of year makes the biggest changes to a route.
Tierkloof at 3P has a very steep loose stoney hill with a massive rock halfway down.
When I did it, the recent rains had made it less loose & the big rock had dislodged & rolled away.
So an obstacle that modded Jeeps usually struggle with was a breeze.

On reflection.... why would anyone who drives a trail for leisure carry “trail modifying heavy rock breaking equipment” with them? It makes no sense at all and definitely not something I have ever seen, on any trail.
