Lifted Prado TX wheel upgrade from 17 to 18”

First thread for me, please move if not in the correct section.
Got a Whatsapp message out of the blue from a guy called Manny, it read: “don’t be a $$$$, keep the Prado”. This since I am contemplating trading it in on a 200 GX but I decided to keep the Prado Tx 2013 model.
Question: i fitted a Mikem suspension that gave me 40mm lift, would upgrading my tyres from 17” to 18” push the limits of the prop shaft and universals?
Looking forward to 4x4 trips with the members in 2019.

You can go up to 20” wheels.... but what is most important is the total diameter of the TYRES.
You need to look at the tyre size, not the rim size.
What are you current tyres? 265/65R17?

Cool, then you can safely go 265/70R17 which is a popular tyre size and the speedo will probably correct itself to almost spot on..... and you get 13mm extra ground clearance. Any bigger and you may put strain on the drivetrain or rub on the wheel arches.

Thanks Kurt, just to make sure. So i already have a lift of 40mm, the tyre change to [18” Edited] on top would then still be fine also?

I would NOT replace my 17" rims with 18" rims if I were you. Reasons:
1. There are less tyre options in 18"
2. You would have to fit a lower profile tyre in order to keep the same diameter.
3. Cost.
You can go up a bit in overall diameter, you have the V6 which has power, but if you go up too much you create issues; the gearbox starts hunting as the ratios are wrong etc.
On fearless I went from 265/65 17" to 265/70 17" which gave me a 13mm lift & didn't affect performance.
I think you could maybe go 285/70 17" (as Uys did on his Fortuner) as long as it still fits in the wheel arch.
But going 265/65 18" will increase the overall diamter too much - in my opinion.

There is no way in hell I would change from a 17” rim to an 18” rim..... at least not for off-roading

Ok clear, so if i keep the rims and go 265/70/17” with my current 40mm lift i should be fine then without issues?

Stick with the 17” rims
265/70/17 would give an additional 18mm body lift on top of the 40mm suspension lift.
That is plenty. Don’t go 18”

13mm Mike, or half an inch. Each tyre profile size (as in 5% of width) equals an inch in overall diameter.

Van die mense wat raad gee het nie n clue hoe tyre sizes werk...
N 265/65/18 en 265/70/17 het identiese diameter en sal geen verskil op voertuig werkverrigting maak.
Ek sal egter by 17” bly, eant dit beteken meer rubber sidewall, en dit is beter vir offroad.

He is on 265/65 17".
I said going 265/65 18" may increase the diameter too much.
