On honeymoon almost 11years back me and Swambo did the meiringskloof trail near Fouriesburg in a freelander 1.
The exhaust broke off just before the rear silencer, luckily had some wire and pliers to tie it up and then drive to Bethelem to get it welded up again at a exhaust shop.
My brother in law had a Nissan sani 3l v6 and we played at chloorkop and he sucked water into the engine through the intake.
We removed all the spark plugs, turned over the engine a couple of times and he was able to drive home and for a few months after, but he eventually had to redo the engine due to damage.

Once had a failed brake master cylinder deep in the Kalahari. On closer inspection I find that the part of it feeding the rear brakes still working. Changed the front and rear brake lines on the cylinder and drove the 260km back home with no sweat.

It did not happen in the bush but will work there as well. The one front brake caliper on RooiTjiep popped a seal on the way home one afternoon, pissing brake fluid all over the show and a complete loss of brakes. Fortunately, I was going slow and there was no one in front of me so I could stop it on the handbrake. When realizing what had happened, I clamped off the flexible part of the brak line with a vice grip, topped up the reservoir and drove on home. You could hardly feel the difference in braking (obviously going slow and braking gently)
I refuse to be POLITICALLY CORRECT to impress others - Deal with it

The tale of an 4.0l Ranger Auto and a starter motor.
The above Ranger is one of my business vehicles. 300k km on the clock. A few weeks ago the starter gave up. I do not repair starter motors, I just chuck them away and fit a new ones. Reason is: my business vehicles are stop/started hundreds of times a day.
I could not find a new starter motor and the one I did find was on back order at Ford.
[Ford is getting like Mitsubish - Manny] The brushes on the starter are spot welded to a brush plate. I cut off the old ones and soldered new ones into place as a temporary repair.
So on Friday 10km into a mining area the starter died again. I knew it was coming as solder very seldom holds up on brush leads due to the high currents drawn by starter motors. What made this difficult is the fact that the vehicle was inside a mining area and very strict rules apply for towing and recovery of a vehicle.
I found a new pirate starter. Long story short it does not engage far enough to touch the ring gear. I stripped the new starter and found that the brush plate is identical to the OEM starter with the only difference being bigger brush holders and brushes. When fitted to the old starter the bigger holders pushed against the armature.
So there we sit filing down the new brushes to fit the old smaller brush holders. A nearby concrete slab acted as a grinding medium.
I reassembled the starter and drove the Ranger home - it was starting like new.
Blerrie auto box things.
Had a good look at the new starter motor. I think I will be able to cut it down on the lathe to make it fit.

3 provinces mate bust a radiator on his Colt.
Solder, pliers and some luck we sorted out the 4 torn veins.
Removed thermostat to keep system open and realized we had no sealant to close the housing so used some zambuck.
Tested it and no leaks. 1 bottle of stop leak used in case.
Drove 560km like that.

Nie vir my nie. Ek het genoeg gesukkel met my volla bakkie se dizzy. Om die punte te vervang sonder om die distributor af te bou in daai volla was 'n nagmerrie elke keer.
