Do you consider guys who are willing to damage their vehicles when off road, heroes?

When the guy revs it up and conquers the obstacle with brute horsepower and masses of momentum in a cloud of dust and parts flying everywhere... Do you slap him on the back and cheer him on?

Do you cheer a guy on when he rolls his 4x4, jumps out and shouts.... "Jirre dit was amper!!!" with a mighty laugh!?

Although it can be humorous and most of the times these are the "sports' of the group, I find this kind of driving a bit worrisome and I tend to not find it awesome, like some other guys I have seen..

And I definitely don't think it displays any skill...

On a serious note though I am with you on the red-line brigade.
Much prefer watching someone overcome an obstacle with finesse and the correct application of the right foot.

It is entertaining as long as it is not my vehicle

Look

I paid a lot of money for my vehicles. I go into obstacles as slow as possible to try and minimize damage

If it was a purpose built trail vehicle, then I will feel a stuff

I love sand driving for the thrill of it and I also hate it. It’s hard on a vehicle and could cause a lot of damage

XJJunkie will share some photos, I’m sure

But heroes??? Nope

It depends completely on the situation, the vehicle and the driver.

If the situation is a pre-planned rough and tumble speed fest or mountain climbing extreme obstacle. Like a Dakar rally.

If the vehicle was designed for this and purpose built.

If the driver is capable and this is actually skill and not just alcohol or stupidity and he understands the cost of repairing and will most probably get his own welder out and fix it. No issue at all.

If it is a brand new Gl driven by the son of the owner to impress his mates, or so on then he will just be another idiot.

So each to his own at least they will pay for their own actions.

I was drawn into the off-road scene by going on trips with the local AWDCSA, who has a credo of "As slow as possible, with just enough momentum to clear the obstacle" and I still prefer it this way.

Call me a Whuss if you want, but I have a lot of "mechanical empathy" as my late father used to refer to it. If a vehicle is abused, I feel more for the vehicle than I would for the driver of the abused vehicle if he got injured by his antics.
