Just add 50 liters of 2SO to every tank and you will be fine

Does Transformer oil have the same density & Cetane rating as diesel...?

Yes you can run the engine on transformer oil, you can run a diesel on almost every type of oil if you care to take the consequence.

Transformer oil is designed to isolate and cool transformers. Total difference from the purpose of diesel. It does not have any lubrication abilities needed for diesel pumps and injectors. What you save now using an alternative fuel is usually spend down the line on fixing pump and injectors.

Please don't take this as expert advise, purely my experience on "alternative" fuel usage in an old school diesel... I have run my 2.7TD Nissan on just about every type of oily substance I have been able to lay my hands on. Right down to old Jet A1. I have always mixed around 50/50 with good old 500ppm diesel pump fuel. I have done most of my running on old cooking oil, old engine oil, ATF and even a bit of old gearbox oil.

Is it worth it??? You need to decide. I racked up just 170K km on alternative fuel. My costs per litre of fuel in the tank ranged from R4-R6, depending on where and how much I had to pay. I could have a full tank of fuel for as little as R300, where a standard fill at the pump would have been around R800. My favorite mix was 50/50 paraffin and cooking oil. Different oils will give you different performance levels, but most will say, that our old donkey diesels don't have performance to start off with, so how would you see a difference.

The day things went wrong, was may own fault. I got greedy (was broke and had to run 100% cooking oil), and the stars just lined up in such a way, that I picked the coldest day (-10DegC), to start her up and do a 160km trip. The oil was too thick for the pump to pull it from the tank, and although I managed to do my trip, I FUBARed the pump. The seal on the throttle shaft popped under too much vacuum pulling the fuel from the tank, and then proceeded to pull air into the pump from this point forward. The air mixed into the fuel through the pump, just has no lubricating properties, and the pump was eaten up. Cost to do the pump over was R4k. What was my saving over 170K km? When I had to do the pump, I pulled the injectors and had them checked at the same time. 170K and one needed slight adjustment, but other than that, they were still perfect. The diesel mechanic could not believe it because of the way I "abuse" my rig. Only thing that is consistent, is the adding of 2SO to every tank (sommer a 500ml bottle to a tank, as I can afford it with my savings on the fuel).

I do believe that if it was not for my greed, and a very cold temp, this would not have happened. Savings for me was massive. Zulucowboy has a 300D Merc he has been running for years on cooking oil, and still going strong.

And all this tells you nothing about Transformer oil, sorry..... What I do know about transformer oil is that, depending on where it was used before, it usually has a fairly high moisture content. Your water trap system needs to be good, and checked regularly. I would go with a 50/50 diesel mix. The old diesel pumps are VERY forgiving compared to the common rail systems.

I don't know if any of this helps you, but this has been my experience.
