So to tow 1500kg boat to Knysna and back from Johannesburg what would you use.

132 kw auto evoque or 110kw manual 2.4 Hilux?

On paper the 132 kw seems a better idea.

But in my head a big boat behind the go kart does not make sense.

Obviously quite a few mountains which might mean 3rd gear for long times.
I have towed it with the Hilux and comfortably sits at 100km hour on freeway.

To tow with the Evoque I will have to fit a tow bar especially for this purpose.

Come you clever guys what now.

I was hoping to have a V8 or v6 to tow with but that is not happening now.

So I have to make do with what I have.

Which is most prudent?

Use the lux!

Hasn’t the Hilux got the better tow rating? Presumably the trailer is braked?

Also the Hilux has rear drum brakes where the Evoque will have discs & it’s autobox can overheat under load.

When it overheats you’ll have to get a mechanic with a laptop to come & clear the codes.

Neil I did not think of that.

I thought of all the electronic gadgets the Evoque has like anti trailer sway and other electronic helps.

I thought the extra 22kw will make a difference.

What is the weight difference between the lux and the evoque?

I would go with the heavier one.

Yes the Hilux is about 350kg heavier than the Evoque.

The Hilux will do what it says on the tin. I wouldn’t trust that Evoque to tow such a big load over a long distance.

There’s also a safety consideration when driving at night, because you could get blinded by all those dash warning & engine lights on the Evoque.

The Evoque can tow up to 1800kg according to the brochure, and you have the technology for control.

I would check vehicle weight and tec versus towing capacity. I didn't want to tow my boat behind my Ford Laser as my Audi was heavier, but the Laser won hands down after testing the two.

LR's are built to drain water, it started with the first one

Clearly the Bakkie is just better

I would use the Hilux for the tow, for reasons mentioned above and also being on holiday at the coast with a bakkie makes a lot of sense.

If you weren’t towing, the Evoque wins hands down of course.
