Diff Lockers

#1

Post by Johannes »

How do you guys feel about the after market Lockers ? Which is best ? Arb or Detroit ?
Arb has become very expensive ! Detroit is still affordable ! But Detroit's are actually permanently locked and unlocks when you turn .

Most new 4x4's have traction control , or a rear diff lock as standard !

Air locker instead over auto Detroit locker, any day of the week.

There’s airlockers better than ARB & cheaper now.

I prefer OX lockers. Manual cable operated.

Had my share with stuff that works on air. They usually find to be problematic in the tightest spots were you really needs them.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

One of the most gifted off-roaders that I know has broken more than two sets of ARB diff locks (well, the internal gears). Has now made his own with stronger materials.

He is hardcore though. But i just wanted to share that ARBs are not infallible :-)

Well when you land on one wheel when locked, something has to give.

+1, put an Ox Locker in the TJ.

What I also like is there is no question whether it is locked or not, you cannot pull the cable if something is not lined up.

Jean, was it worth installing the lockers? Have you ever gotten over a obstacle with lockers on that you could not do with lockers off?

I only put a locker in the rear Chris, mainly for going to carnage but it arrived a few weeks too late :(

There were two spots so far that I couldn't make without the locker without doing major damage to the softroader, i.e. my speed would have to be way too high for the terrain, even with the locker I had to go to around 4000 rpm in 1st low to make it. :D So really fun obstacles, with lovely noises from the exhaust :D

Other than that it is handy for slow crawling through cross axles where my flex runs out, I can just stop engage the locker and drive on.

Chris, I know you didn't direct the question to me, but for my part, I can say that I've encountered several obstacles that I couldn't do with diff locks off.
Those are usually quite extreme though.

Most important to me: One often makes a terrain-damaging spinning mess of things without diff locks, but gently crawl over the same obstacle with.
