4x4 Action Group

I'm pondering installing an EGT kit on my Tuna, mainly for towing.

Any kits to recommend?
What can I expect to pay?
Where do you install the temp probe? Before or after the turbo?

I’ve only ever heard of Madman units. Anthony Forgey will be able to give you better advice than me.

EGT is neccessary when you make an old inferior motor work harder than it was designed to do.
But a modern well-made Toyota motor running well within it's abilities doesn't need that...

there are a few options available:

Madman has an EGT kit which consists of:

1. the gauge

depending on where you mount it you may need a pod or not

Add 1250 for labour

other options are available:

As far as positioning of the probe....

the ideal position is pre-turbo at the point where the manifold collects just before the turbo.

However, on some vehicles it's just not practical. Some Land rovers for example have a plate at the one end of the manifold which you either drill and tap or you replace with a pre drilled and tapped plate.
Others just have no access to the ideal location (without removing half the fuel system or the EGR system).

In such cases it's perfectly fine to fit the probe in the downpipe as close to the turbo as possible. If this method is used, be aware that there is a temperature drop of EGT's through the turbo of around 150 - 200 degrees or so. This means that if your safe egt's pre turbo would have been, say 650, you must now watch for a peak (sustained) temp of 450 - 500
