1 New or 2 old

OK this is just Mal Hannes dreaming in a gat jeuk way.

My Hilux is the bottom of the bottom range for the new shape. the first few SRX narrow body was really limited in any modern technology.

I love it for its simplicity and doing exactly what it says it will do.

But I am getting spoiled by driving Mandy's Evoque.

So what I want is : Auto, permanent 4x4, proper sound, smoother ride, better safety and more power.

So to go to a new Amarok 3l that will give me all the above will cost about R 400k. Trade the Hilux in obviously.

Again I am only dreaming right now.

But for much less than R 400k I can get some seriously nice second hand SUV's and then I can still have Mr Reliable in the garage if the SUV has a heart failure or something similar. (Range Rover Sport v8 diesel, Touareg 3 L Diesel, Disco 4 V8. Jeep Cherokee) (2010-2014)

So yes the Amarok will give me everything I need but I would have to be very careful with it as it is my bread and butter and it will be hellish expensive if I have an oops off road.

I am driving more than ever and will be doing 50 000 km a year if I split that between 2 vehicles they will both last longer.

So after we have exhausted the Diesel petrol lets talk about 2 old vehicles versus 1 new.

A question you need to ask is, “do I need a 3rd vehicle”?

Mamma drives the Evoque and you get yourself the 3liter V6.

No extra license, No extra fuel, No extra Insurance, No extra garage space and the list goes on

So. Go 1. Just my thought

Mal, just keep the Hilux and stop spending so much money. The country is doomed so best you keep some savings.

I recommend selling the Hilux, just out of principle.

You guys have become boring.

Waiting for Manny to come moan as well.

Since the naughty boys became the prefects they have lost their personality.

If you going to do 25kkm on it, is petrol still an option?

Neil.

At least if the fuel bill is hurting I can drive the Hilux.

Obviously some diesel luxury Suvs don't have a brilliant reputation.

So I have options. If I believe you and Grips on the other thread then V8 is the way to go but then you ask a question like this.

If I bought Toyota I would not be scared of Diesel but a TDV6 scares me. I don't know anything about the TDV8 does it suffer the same reputation?

If I got a Prado diesel I would not have more power only permanent 4x4 and a more safety and comfort.

So if Toyota and Landrover Diesel is off the cards and petrol Toyota is not for me. Ford is a beautiful SUV but I want permanent 4x4. Then what's left?

Vw audi diesel or Landrover Petrol?

I know you are Jeep fan but I don't even know where to start.

Mal, get a Pajero. You can drive it in 4x2 or 4x4 permanently, it’s up to you. The Superselect 2 system is super duper.

It all comes down to what you want to spend on fuel after the purchase price.....if I understand correctly.

A sub R400k isn’t going to buy too many luxury used diesels. So it’ll have some age & mileage on it, in which case you’d need to be careful. A mate of mine eventually managed to get rid of his RRS Tdv6. It’s wasn’t a pleasing ownership experience.

Older modern diesels can be hugely expensive to maintain & fix, vs petrol, where you pay for your sins at the pump.

So if you buy something with 100kkm on it, in 4 years it’ll be around 200kkm.
