What engine conversion do you have?

#1

Post by Chris Stoffel »

Lot's of 4x4's do not have the original engine anymore. We replace engines for some reason or another. Mostly for more power.
Susuki SJ's with 1400 Nissan motors. Jimny's with 1600 and 1800 Toyota motors. American V8's and Lexus V8'S and stroked 4L Wrangler motors.

So, tell us what you have under the bonnet that is not normal and tell us how it is working out for you?

1992 Defender 3.5V8 , replaced the 3.5 with a 3.9 fuel injection . Did this conversion , just for a little extra power ! The 3.5 really battled with the 33inch tyres on open roads , The 3.9 has got a little more power , really happy with it , just not happy with the Spittronic fuel management system !
The reason for the 3.9 choice is simple !! It was a straight fit !! No cutting , welding or adapter plates .

Chris now you take me down memory lane. Ihave done deep into the 20th engine conversions. Started out with the G60 Patrol in 1986.

Bought the Patrol from a farmer friend. It had a Ford 302 v8 a three speed Cruiser box and Patrol T-case. Horrible conversion with the box and t-case filled with grease to curb oil leaks. The 302 had sump compression and seems to be running on few of its 8 cylinders. Learned a lot of lessons during the Patrol built. In 86 very few 4x4`s came with 5-speed boxes.

Those days the guys from the Jeep Club run Alfa 5-speed boxes behind Chevy and Ford v8`s. I did a Ford 302 v8 to Alfa 5 speed to Patrol t-case myself. After stripping the second gear for I does not know how many times, I found a Mazda 5-speed truck gearbox and installed that.

Got married in 1993 and had a SFA Hilux at that stage decided to let go of the Patrol. Bought it back in 2006 and it now belongs to my Youngest son. Have refreshed the 302 with a set of Edelbrock Alu Heads, cam and intake. According to Edelbrock that combination should give 260kw and 520nm. On the safe side I would say 230kw and 500nm. Breaking the Mazda truck box with the new power upgrade we installed a Land Cruiser H55 5-speed box and t-case.

During my Patrol build I did two other conversions for friends. V6 Ford to 5 speed Alfa box into a CJ 2A. V6 Ford to Alfa 5-speed in Series 1 Shorty Landy. Later v8 Rover and Rover auto box to Series t-case.

On my last and third SFA Hilux in the mid 90`s I did a v6 Ford conversion myself. Enjoyed the v6 Hilux tremendously. In the 90`s I did several other conversions v8`s into platkarre and some other boring conversions like 2c Toyota diesels into almost everything including a fiber glassed Jeep CJ2 and
a Chevy V6 into a very scarce Jeep MB.

Currently we have the 347 stroker Yank Ranger, 302 v8 Patrol, 302 V8 Ranger, Lexus v8 SFA Hilux, 2.8 Supra SFA Hilux and the F250 that we plan a huge old diesel for in the yard.

As my priorities have changed regarding 4x4`ing and me and the wife soon to be alone around the house I bought the two Cruisers mainly for touring the Wild.

Want to strip down the Yank Ranger to something like a competition 4x4. Fit a roll cage and get rid of all the extra weight. Have started building a 408 v8 stroker for the Yank Ranger. Have stripped the newly build 351w from the F250 . The 408 stroker will be a classic stroker built.
I am bussy machining down counter weights, oil flinger and crank balance step on a 400 big block crank to fit it into the 351W. Going to use 351 rods 302 pistons and over bore to achieve 408 cubic inches. No replacement for displacement

One thing once you get use to the low down torque and power of a Yank v8 nothing will be the same ever. :D :D

May Be a shorty Cruiser with a Chevy LS sometime along the line if I can lay my hands on a shorty Cruiser. :D :D
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

Jy kry stroker kitsvir 1GR Toyota enjin hulle is agter so duur jy kan net sowel supercharge.
4.66l stroker kit vir 1GR.

FJ Cruiser met front locker is klaar `n voertuig wat `n paar merke bokant die normale standaard 4x4 presteer veral in duine ry.

Grips, I think the 4.6 Range Rover V8 is basically just a stroked 3.9 Landy V8?

4.0l straight six Jeep engine is as tough as nails. You can stroke them to 5.0l. Good for 700hp and 700ft/lbs when using a blower
