this type of rear locker is standard on mahindra pikup and following post is my experience on
how it works and when it works.

to engage, automatically, vehicle needs to be in motion while both rear wheels are spinning/slipping until
they achieve speed difference great enough to open governor to lock.(100-200 rpm)
locking moment can scare as it sounds like gun shot.
once locked it will continue to hold until free turning wheel finds grip or speed limit is reached.(20kph)
this is good when slippery or when doing axle twister while keeping momentum.

when it does not work?
few times it got me surprised over rocks where vehicle needs to crawl, stop, crawl, stop.
every time i stop in cross axle situation locker disengage it self and refuse to lock again
unless i reverse half of meter and try to pull away again.
it becomes interesting if there is no space to reverse or can not reverse.
in videos named fail to engage bakkie is siting on rear diff while left side is inside sink hole(photos) and i had to winch my self out

this is how to test locker:

rear wheels of the ground
front wheels choked
gear in to prevent prop from turning
spin.

on this video it can be heard moment it locks.
imagine that at higher wheel speed
