Getting Shafted

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

About a year ago my KB300 D-Teq developed a leak where the drive shaft (prop shaft) enters the gearbox.

(Note: The English call Sideshafts Driveshafts & the shaft from gearbox to diff the propeller (Prop) shaft.
We & the yanks refer to Drive shaft & side shafts.)

Anyhoo, my mate Shaun Niemand (Outlaw Shaun) very kindly took it to a Prop Place near his work in Alrode.
The guy called me & said the problem was so slight it wasn't worth fixing.
I persisted & he replaced the bearing/seal.

Now, a year later, it leaks worse than before.

My 2004 Colt 2800D workhorse (on it's 3rd Diff) has developed a severe drive shaft shudder - I have taken the vehicle off the road.

So I'm in need of a Drivelines specialist.

I can go back to Shaun's connection & klap him upside his head & get him to fix the D-Teq then, if he redeems himself, take the Colt to him.

Or I can find someone new. Alrode is 45km from here.

If you know of a Sh!thot Drivelines outlet that you can personally recommend which is either IN the Woes Rand or not too far from the Woes Rand, please let me know.

Thank you & Dankie...

I've only heard good things about Centurion Gearbox and Diff Center. Haven't used them myself though.

Strangely I don't seem to break stuff too much, possibly because I have some mechanical sympathy and/or I don't go oversize on tyres.

Avoid Delports in JHB South.

Sajco in Oxford St Randburg ( next to JKM & Rim guys I think) specialise in Prop balancing Univs and CVs etc
and I would ask their opinion.
... if its deeper gearbox surgery I would find a good Isuzu Indi.
May just be a a universal and/or flange seal/gasket and end-float (slog) adjustment problem.

The D-Teq is driven by me and is usually totally unladen - empty.
Its stock standard but it was 11 years old with close to 250000km when that bearing developed a slight leak.

The Colt is only driven by drivers, its 18 years old and has well over 300000km, despite it's very low power output (Mitsu claimed 72kW, but trust me, it's about half that) it has managed to go through Diffs and has other driveline issues. How, given that it is so powerless, I have no idea...

Centurion is a bit far...

Chas, I had a bad experiance with SAJCO however I remain unsure if it was SAJCO's fault or SAC Centurion trying to scam me.
I'm 99.9 sure it was SAC as they were really shady....

I cannot vouch as I've not had work done there personally.

But Tannie Google tells me that "Propshaft Specalist and Engineering" is in Krugersdorp and has glowing reviews on the Interwebs. Both Google Reviews and FakeBook ones.

Perhaps give them a call and hear what they say...

Sajco are pretty narrowly specialised in routine prop and CVs joint refurb & replacement ... I think if theres a deeper/bigger problem they will recognise it and refer you on.
Welsh Taffy guy as I recall but maybe there are new guys there.

At 11 years old and 250k km, I have to state that the Isuzu is a lesser breed of vehicle. Similar to the Colt. 300k km and stuffed. Does it have Super Select [nn] ?

For the Isuzu, I can probably only blame the driver. :)

Have to agree....our Wrangler is called unreliable but is on 300,000kms and 10 years and has had almost no repairs.

The D-Teq has been extremely reliable.

The Colt less so, but it never has less than 600kg on board and often rolls out with 1000kg plus.
It has never been driven by anyone with any mechanical.sympathy and only had one service in its first 80000km.

In fact, when I bought it off my fathers estate with 81000km it had a completed stuffed clutch and numerous other issues.

But it has had a hard life.

Remember this is a 2800D workhorse.
Single Cab.
No turbo.
No power.

Overall my entire fleet has been impressively reliable...

The worst vehicle we ever had (which was prior to be starting my own company 22 years ago) was a Nissan Hardbody 2.5 (no turbo) that motor didnt make 200000km.
Definately the most underpowered vehicle I have ever driven...

MEH. You've seen my Tata. You've seen our farm road. It's used for sand, rock, bricks, cement, wood, and generally abused. Loads up to 1.5t of wet plaster sand and handles Zilkaatsnek. 200,000kms and hardly ever serviced..........
