EV's make up less than 1% of SA sales.
It's not up to 'SA' it is up to the manufacturers making vehicles here to decide to build EV's here (for export)...
I've had the privelege of driving a few EV's lately... If one looks at them from a pure drivability point and for what they are (ignoring the propaganda and other political bs), they are great vehicles. Very responsive with instant torque... I genuinely think a EV will make a great off roader....
Charging also is not as bad as I thought. With the fast charging network here in Australia you can get most vehicles back to 80% charge within a reasonable amount of time (+-20min). Then getting another 300 - 400km out of the battery. Did a few simulations and we can do the trip from Brisbane to Sydney 1'045km in an EV and if we make 4 charging stops (Driving Polestar 2 with normal range)(shorter charging instead of 2 long charge stops) we will look at around 1h30min's worth of charging. 1h30 Min stop on a trip over 1'000km is really not that bad in my opinion. However this is on a main route with the necessary infrastructure.
If one ignores all the politics and bs around EV's, they are really great vehicles. I can honestly see my garage having a EV for the commute and an oil burner for overlanding. For fun at an off-road day on a course close to home or where you were able to charge, an EV 4x4 should be just as capable (if not more in some cases) as the diesel equivalent. However a lot more will need to happen before they can replace the diesel's for overlanding and remote work
You're just jealous about me having electricity to charge it with to begin with....
But... I fully see the shortcomings of EV's. I really do. But I can also see that there is a place under the sun for them where they will work just fine. Between swambo and mini swambo (5) I cannot avoid taken multiple stops. So for me this is an acceptable (not perfect) option. Plus free charging at work from the rooftop solar.
I'll still have my Fortuner (or equivalent) for longer trips. (pending stock availability for the colony). Listening at current rumors' it might even be a Hybrid Fortuner by then...

So probly most of time ( 80% ? If not more )
well within feasible field of capability of todays EVs .
For most people would be the same.
1/2hr to work and 1/2 (tiring) hour back

Redman, 1hr30min over 1000km is unacceptably long.
I drive to CT 1400km and the stops barely take an hour in total...
Until EV's can comfortable get a range of 500km+ they are not an option in large countries like SA or Oz.

You definitely speak from a single person's persprective.
1) I can remember when last I drove from Cape Town to Pretoria in one go. It's always a 2 day trip. Hell. Even if I go to the farm in the Free State, I sleep over in Beaufort.
2) Having a wife and kids in the car guarantees you stop every 2 hours for a toilet stop, chips and a coke.
