Just like that report that said "with over 80000 deaths Africa has been slow to react to the pandemic ravaging the continent"
So a disease that had not affected ted over 99% of the continent was 'ravaging' the continent.

As I keep saying: EV's are great in countries that produce more than enough power and people are confined to large cities in smaller countries and there is excellent intercity public transport.
EV in Zurich - makes sense.
EV in Bulawayo - nonsense.

Zimbabwe in nearly 10x the size of Switzerland...

I think urban/suburban and near-city commuters
will go electric first/most and thats a big percentage of todays car owners/drivers.
Long distance and multi-hour drivers ( eg Intercity salesmen, couriers, farmers etc) will be more vulnerable to the cost & practicality limits of current solar EVs etc and it will take much longer for the EV market to largely penetrate that market.
There will be incentives and disincentives to help
the transition along eg far higher licensing charges for ICEs far higher fuel taxes etc.
IMO ICEs > 2.5L should be targeted out first
and Smokey V8s etc arguably banned for the
benefit of the compliant.

In South Africa, government rejects calls to de-regulate the petrol price.
Reason: De-regulation will lead to fuel stations introducing Self-Service like our poor cousins in the Northern Hemisphere are subjected to.
Self-Service will lead to the end of the 'Pomp-joggie' (fuel attendant, Chas).
There are about 750 000 pump attendants in the RSA.
Government is loathe to put another 750 000 out of work.

Now, if de-regulation can put 750 000 people out of work, what will full EV adoption do?
750 000 pump attendants.
Thousands of other Fuel station staff.
Fuel browser drivers.
Refinery staff.
Mechanics
Etc.

EV's could destroy an economy.

Obviously some jobs will change to EV related repairs and setting up charging stations etc.
But the net result will be job losses....

Developing countries still need ICE vehicles for the foreseeable future...

Thanks to Greta's shouting the EU has now indirectly forced this on a lot of other markets as well. I cannot see the likes of BWM, VW, Mercedes, Volvo, Fiat, Renault, Peugeot etc. continue to invest in ICE vehicles. Some of these already spend 85%+ or R&D budget on EV's. Other markets will be forced to adapt sooner than later.

But, the likes of Toyota, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Mahindra, Ford, GWM might be scoring market share (all depending if they also wanna go the 100% EV route).

I foresee a lot of chaos in the next few years... Power grids globally being put under pressure as every 2nd site will now see a EV charging station installed, a global increase in demand for lithium, graphite, cobalt, and manganese (not the cleanest of mining operations hey!)

EV's in Europe and even Kangarooville make a lot more sense than in Africa.

I had a Polestar 2 last week (we are busy gearing up our EV offerings and Polestar decided to support this with a vehicle to use)

Realistic range on this model is about 490km (Sold as 500-550km range but I had some traffic in the mornings). $16.00 for a full charge from empty for a range of almost 500km ain't that bad.

Dead dinosaurs give me a range on average of about 750km (+- 67L on average @ around $145 per tank) on the Fortuner.

These EV's are great fun to drive and will work perfect for a lot of us working in the city. (without load shedding)

I had a debate about this with an acquaintance a while ago. He is a bit of a bunny-hugger and was chewing me out in terms of my vehicle's carbon footprint etc. He was telling me I should get a smaller vehicle to help save the planet. I disagreed with him and (rather politely, I think) told him to GFYS.

My 4.5 Litre dead-dinosaur-guzzling beast exists. It's "carbon footprint" is already there. Yes, it guzzles fuel and that contributes to that footprint, but not nearly as much as the "carbon footprint" of manufacturing a new 900CC platkar (or, for that matter, even an EV).

In short: I feel that targeting my vehicle out because it's > 2.5L and forcing me to buy a < 2.5L car is pointless.
