My dear friend Christo (Grips) is an extremely knowledgeable engine hobbyist.
He has built and tuned many a (large capacity) engine.
He comes from the "there is no replacement for displacement" school of thought.
He currently owns a V8 D4D Land Cruiser 76 & has a fully kitted for camping Land Cruiser 79 Single Can V6 4.0.
He also had a V8 Ford Yank Ranger.
To grips, anything under 3.0 liters is not an option.
He looks forward to the day that Toyota will (hopefully) drop the V6 3.3 Twin Turbo into the 70 series.
However, I suggest Toyota should merely drop the 150kW version of the 2.8 GD 1GD - FTV Engine into the 70 series .
Here's why,,,

Here is a comparison between the 2.8 GD 1GD-FTV motor & the V8 4.5 1VD - FTV single turbo motor as fitted to the 70 series...
1GD-FTV 2.8GD
Power 150kW @ 3400rpm
Torque 500Nm @ 1600 - 2800rpm
V8 4.5 1VD - FTV
Power 151kW @ 3400rpm
Torque 430Nm @ 1200 - 3200 rpm.
As you can see, the 2.8 betters the 4.5, but, what about lower down the rev range?
The low down, effortless, lugging power of the V8 is, after all, what you want.
Well, lets see...
At 1200rpm
1GD-FTV 76kW and 460Nm (that's more torque than the 1VD - FTV produces at peak).
1VD - FTV 66kW and 430Nm (10kW and 30Nm less than the smaller motor).
At 2500rpm
1GD-FTV 130kW and 500Nm
1VD - FTV 105kW and 414Nm
At 3000rpm
1GD-FTV 148kW and 450Nm
1VD - FTV 129kW and 412Nm
So, as you can see, all the way from 1200rpm to 3400rpm the 2.8 1GD-FTV betters the 4.5 1GD-FTV in both power & torque.
BTW, there were rumours that Toyota was working on a twin turbo 2.8 with 180kW and 540Nm...

Manny that is all nice and fine on paper. Christopher as you knows drive a 2.8 GD6 Hilux. I am quite familiar with the performance of the 2.8.
We have done numerous 4x4 trips side by side.
In real life the 2.8 does not have to low down grunt of the 1VD V8.
The only thing of the 2.8GD6 engine is its good fuel consumption in the Hilux body. Put the same engine in a heavier brick shape 70 Series Land Cruiser and I am sure you will be down to between 8 and 9km/l.
But yes I do admit that the 2.8GD6 would be nice in a 70 Series.
Knowing Toyota and the way they think it is not going to happen. See that the upgraded 70 Series will keep with the 1VD V8 for some time according some Australian papers.
By the way with some real minor mods the 1VD in the 76 Cruiser do 170kW and 500Nm.
For now there is no 2.8 or 3.3 70 Series Cruisers so I am happy to go with the 1VD V8
