A Tread Thread about Tyre Nyers...

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

When I bought my Cooper St Maxx's, the tread was 14mm deep.
I know on other tyres the tread, when new is only 10 or 12mm deep.

On my Coopers the tread on the front two is now 3mm deep.
On the rear two it is around 6mm.

The legal limit is1mm tread over 75% of the tyre surface area.

I'd assume going below 2 or 3mm is pushing it.

I have 5 x BFG's I got from Mike PS that have about 8mm tread left, which I may put on Fearless when I return from Bot's.

What do you guys think?

Is 3mm still OK?

If I was planning a Botswana trip I'd make sure I had the best rubber that I could get fitted to my vehicle. That Botswana sand isn't kind to tyres so go with the best you can have on Fearless.

Run them as is. Go to Bots with them. I ran upto 2mm. Still had good grip on my Falken Wildpeak’s (9 years old).

But obviously don’t run them if you if have cracks or other issues. Run them… Tyres are damn expensive. Get your money’s worth before replacing IMO… Bit I’m cheap that way. You are still Safe, what more do you need…

Dunno Manny, I don't like the
idea of possibly struggling with flats etc when I'm so far from home..... Especially if I'm on holliday.

I would fit new ones for the trip then swop out again to the old ones when I'm back.....

He'll be fine....his tyres will be too afraid of him raising his voice at them, that they will behave themselves....

If he has a problem he can fill them with hot air.

I would rather risk the Coopers than having to put BF’s on my vehicle

3mm isnt great, but probably easily do-able.
That 8mm on the BFGs sound a bit more appealing to me, but, im a BFG fan.

Maybe the deciding factor should be the actual age of the tyres? Which ones are younger (assuming the BFG's)? Id go with the younger tyres? By the time you've 'used up' the coopers, the BFGs would have spent another 6 months or a year wasting away

I've decided to take the Coopers on their last trip.
When I return I'll toss them & probably fit the BFG's.

However, I'm keen on a set of Maxxis too - let's see how the rest of 2022 treats me,

I'm sure the Coopers will be fine. They are, in my opinion, a much better tyre than the BF's. :)

In my not so humble opinion, Coopers are overpriced shyte. Even Hankook are better.
